Writing these assignments has been a ton of fun for me. My career goal is to be a sports broadcaster someday, but I would be equally happy with sports journalism, and this class has laid the groundwork for me to be able to fall back on that. I love everything to do with sports, and having options available to me for a particular career path is very useful.
I love that I can now look at something like a feature article or a press release and have a solid understanding of the process by which they are written. For instance, I now know the distinct difference between a press release and a sports article. Not only that, but I know that an article's purpose is to explain a press release in more common terminology and phrasing.
In my writing process, I mainly relied on descriptive methods. For instance, for the Sports Memoir and the Feature Article, I tried to write in such a way that immersed the reader in the environment. I did this by not merely telling the audience what was happening, but by telling it in a way that the reader can both understand and envision what I'm describing. For instance, at the beginning of my Sports Memoir, instead of stating that it was September, I tell the world what it was like at that time of year, with Fall just beginning.
The Press Release was interesting because I was tasked with doing virtually the opposite, which is not at all what I am used to. The purpose of the press release is to be as direct and to the point as possible, with little or no filler words. It is purely information. To do this, I had to abandon my traditional writing style, which was challenging yet enjoyable. These are all things that I have learned in this course, which I am excited to utilize in my career.
I hope that viewers of this portfolio see how I've grown in my sports narrative writing abilities throughout the semester. This class has been tons of fun for me, and I will certainly look forward to using the skills I have learned over the semester down the road.
