Faunal Osteology Collection

In addition to the artifacts and mammoth bones housed at Foothill, the Center for Applied Anthropology also holds an extensive collection of North American faunal remains. Many specimens and individual bones have been processed, cataloged, and stored in containers as CAA’s official faunal collection and record. These specimens serve as a teaching instrument, both to educate students on the different skeletal systems of various mammals, birds, reptiles, etc., and to provide reference collection for identification of new bones and specimens found.

The Center is also home to animal remains in varying degrees of decomposition, safely stored in a freezer at the laboratory until the animal can be processed, cataloged, and the specimen added to the faunal collection.
