Burrito
The burrito is a hearty and versatile Mexican-American dish consisting of a large flour tortilla wrapped around a flavourful filling, usually made up of seasoned meat, rice, beans, cheese, and various condiments.
One of the burrito’s greatest strengths is its adaptability—it can be simple or elaborate, vegetarian or meat-filled, spicy or mild. It’s ideal for meal prep, quick dinners, or on-the-go lunches. Whether grilled for a crispy finish or wrapped in foil to retain its warmth, the burrito offers a satisfying bite in every layer, with flavours and textures coming together in a handheld package that needs no utensils.
For the filling:
1 lb ground beef or chicken
1 tbsp olive oil
1 small onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 packet taco seasoning (or homemade mix of chili powder, cumin, paprika, salt)
½ cup water
Additional fillings:
2 cups cooked white or brown rice
1 (15 oz) can black beans or pinto beans, drained and rinsed
1 cup shredded cheddar or Mexican blend cheese
1 cup salsa or Pico de Gallo
1 cup guacamole or sliced avocado
½ cup sour cream
Chopped lettuce (optional)
Hot sauce (optional)
For assembly:
4 large flour tortillas (10–12 inches)
Foil (for wrapping, optional)
1. Cook the meat:
In a skillet over medium heat, heat olive oil. Add onion and sauté until soft, about 3 minutes.
Add garlic and ground meat. Cook until browned, breaking up clumps.
Stir in taco seasoning and water. Simmer for 5–7 minutes until thickened. Remove from heat.
2. Prepare other fillings:
Warm the rice, beans, and tortillas.
Lay each tortilla flat and layer rice, beans, meat, cheese, salsa, guacamole, and sour cream. Add lettuce and hot sauce if using.
3. Wrap the burrito:
Fold the sides inward, then roll from the bottom up, tucking tightly as you go.
Optionally, toast the burrito in a dry skillet for 1–2 minutes per side for a crisp finish.
Serve warm, whole or sliced in half.
Q: Can I make burritos ahead of time?
Yes! Wrap them tightly in foil or plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat in a skillet, oven, or microwave.
Q: What’s the difference between a burrito and a wrap?
A burrito typically includes warm fillings like beans, rice, meat, and cheese in a large flour tortilla, while wraps often use cold fillings like deli meat and veggies.
Q: Can I make it vegetarian or vegan?
Absolutely. Use beans, rice, grilled vegetables, tofu, or plant-based meats. Substitute dairy with vegan cheese and sour cream.
Q: How do I keep the burrito from falling apart?
Don't overfill. Warm tortillas before wrapping to make them more pliable and easier to fold tightly.
