This project has the possibility of a maximum of 100 points.
The total points for the whole project may not exceed 100 points. You may do any combination of pre-approved activities and essay for no more than 100 points.
There are five categories of activities for earning credits:
1. Volunteer Participants/Audiences from 3:00 p.m. till about 5:00 p.m. (50 points) –
As participants, you will come to the Multipurpose Room (Wagstaff Gym) in a timely manner and be an active listener. Tardy arriving and early departing participants will not get full credit. For every fraction of 5 minutes tardy or early departure, 10 points will be deducted without any exception.
2. Optional Raw Whole Food Plant-Based Potluck Dinner (50 Points Possibility): No cooking is required.
You are cordially invited to a fun and informative Raw Vegan/plant-based potluck dinner. This free fun event is open to you, your family, friends, neighbors and anybody else that would enjoy a really good healthy meal with some great folks. Please avoid bringing kids under 12 years age.
This is an optional and pre-approved project. No expensive or fancy ingredients and/or spices are necessary to participate in the Raw Whole Food Plant-Based Potluck Dinner. You do not need to be a chef to participate. As to this project, you have a choice of preparing a raw meal or if you insist, you may cook a meal. With raw materials, one may prepare a very nutritious and colorful meal. No surprises please! See the following graphic:
Also with about $20 if spend wisely, one can easily feed about 6 or 7 people. If you do not know how, ask me or visit me.
Under this choice, you have two choices:
A. Raw Vegan/Plant-Based Meal (50 points): 30 points for the preparation time plus 20 points for ingredients. If you pay for at least $20 for ingredients and prepare a meal within the guidelines, you may qualify for up to 50 points. If you spend less than $20 dollars, you will get one point for a dollar spent. If you so desire, I will pay for the cost of ingredients of the meal up to $20 with prior approval. In this case, you may qualify for 30 points possibility. Whether you buy or I pay, receipts are required for points and reimbursement. I will reimburse for the expense before or after the event. All recipes and ingredients must be approved before any purchase. To qualify for the points, you are required to stay for dinner till we adjourn. Dishes and/or ingredients without prior approval will NOT receive any credit or reimbursements.
If you love to prepare a meal and willing to put the time, this project is for you. Genuine participants (not captive) are encouraged to participate. Do not do this project for the grade purpose only. Nourishing your and other people’s bodies is a commitment to a healthy lifestyle — not just getting points — so make healthier choices. You will be graded based on the quality of a healthy dish. No exotic and expensive ingredients are necessary to prepare healthy food. I am here to help. Please ask for my or Google’s assistance if needed.
To avoid duplication and the waste, please send your recipe along with the approximate cost of ingredients for my approval. To avoid bringing unhealthy food, you must follow these guidelines.
Print your recipe after my approval and bring it to the event with your name on it. After the dinner, attach your recipe to your assignment sheet in order to receive credit.
Your proposed meal must have at least THREE of the following ingredients:
Whole Grains
Vegetables (Organic Preferred)— No precut veggie trays
Fruits (not canned) – Organic Preferred – No precut fruit trays
Legumes (not canned)
Seeds and Nuts (not salted and/or roasted)
Consider multiple ingredients of food with nutritious and well-balanced plant-based whole food. See the following chart for the guidance:
The more colorful your dish, the better the grade you will receive. Remember the Rainbow when you choose the ingredients.
This is not a social gathering and/or church potluck meeting. It is a graded assignment. I have created this opportunity for you to learn about a healthy lifestyle and smart thinking. I want you to practice healthy cooking and smart shopping habits. Meantime you earn some points. See the guideline at this link.
B. Providing Raw Vegan/Plant-Based Food (maximum of 30 points possibility) on as NEEDED BASIS: This is a pre-approved activity.
If you do not like to prepare a meal or just simply do not have time to prepare anything, you may bring fruits, veggies, nuts, and seeds or other vegan food (with my prior approval) on an as-needed basis.
You may receive 30 points with the purchase of at least $20 (receipts are required). However, if you spend less than $20 dollars, you will get one point for a dollar spend plus 10 points for your time. You may spend more than 20 dollars if you so desire, but your credit is limited to 20 points or reimbursement is limited to $20. If you would like to be reimbursed, I will be happy to reimburse you with receipts. In this case, you will earn only 10 points.
To avoid duplication and waste, please send me your list and be specific. List the followings:
Type of fruits, veggies, nuts or other vegan/plant-based food
Amount/quantity
Cost per item
Where you will buy the items?
All items must be delivered to my office by noon on the day of the event. No credit will be given to any purchased items after 12:00 p.m. (noon) on the day of the event. You are required to stay for dinner to qualify for the points. If you just bring the food and leave, no points will be given for your purchases.
To get an idea about this event, please check out the pictures at the following link:
3. Limited Pre-Approved Additional Activities: You can be a videographer or photographer as-needed basis.
100 points for the videography of the whole presentation per my instructions (50 points for the participation + 50 points for the videography):
Bring your own picture or video camera (no cell phone camera) and record the event per my instruction; You must meet me in person with your camera to discuss the availability, details, and instructions. Without prior approval, no credit will be given to the photographers and/or videographers.
Videos must cover section by section of the presentation and introduction. Having a tripod will be very helpful to get quality videos. If you have a remote mic, please bring along. With your videos, you will answer the following questions:
What happened during the day/event?
Who were present or who were the participants?
What topics were covered?
What areas/places were covered with the day's event?
What proof do you have for your participation?
The bottom line: present smart factual information in creative ways.
100 points for Photography (50 points for the participation + 50 points for photography):
You must bring your own pre-approved camera. Take at least 200 pictures: By your pictures, you will tell a story by answering the following questions:
What happened during the day/event?
Who were present or who were the participants?
What topics were covered?
What areas/places were covered with the day's event?
What proof do you have for your participation?
The bottom line: present smart factual information in creative ways.
The quantity is not as important as the quality of pictures. A minimum of 200 pictures is required. However, I would like a pictorial essay of the whole event via pictures. The beginning and the end are very important for the pictures. Depending on the quality of your pictures or videos, you will be graded on a 200 scale.
If I assign a student to take pictures or record with my cameras, the student may not claim any credit for photography and/or videography. He or she as a volunteer is assigned to help with the event for 50 points only during the lecture period.
Upon completion of your assignment as a videographer or photographer, please put your camera's memory stick in an envelope with your name and give it to me. You may come to my office the next day or so and pick up your memory stick.
The pictures and videos are considered as TJC property.
4. Pre and Post Event Assistance (30 points): On an as-needed basis, for every hour of work, I will give you 10 points. Few volunteers are needed to carry posters and display items from my office to the lecture room and return them back at the end, help with setup, cleanup, washing dishes, takedown, check-in, and check-out guests, taking pictures with Dr. K.’s camera, etc. For details, please visit Dr. K. in person.
Optional Essay or Poetry Writing Guidelines (25 points):
Writing is the lifeblood of a liberal education. Student writing ability is also crucial for many forms of assessing learning. Therefore, students may prepare one page typed single-spaced essay or poem and turn it in no later than three days (including Sunday) after the event by 5:00 p.m. All papers should be sent as an attachment in "doc", "RTF" or "pdf" format. Avoid sending your paper with ".wps" extension. My computer will not be able to open documents with ".wps" extension. Use Arial font with 10-12 points.
While your essay or poem may be in a creative writing style, you may address the following questions:
"What I learned from this event" or
"My most important impression of the lecture"
"What I liked the most and/or least about the event"
If you wish to write on all three topics, that's fine. You may comment on the content as well as the manner in which the lecture was conducted. I am looking for creative, diverse and sincere personal expressions in any style of writing. I prefer to receive your paper through an e-mail attachment at mkho@tjc.edu
If you send your project by an e-mail attachment, make sure to SAVE (label) your document as follows:
Last Name First Name Veganism Lecture.doc
Avoid sending your paper within the context of your e-mail. I prefer to receive the essay as an attachment in order to file accordingly.
If you do not label the projects according to the instructions, you will not get any credit.
