This bibliography and index is intended for use by elementary music teachers in the United States. There are many sources of folk songs for pedagogical use.  The conscientious practitioner aims to locate the best songs for preparing, presenting, and practicing specific musical concepts.  There is, however, a shortage of consolidated information regarding where the songs can be found.   The purpose of this bibliography is to aid students in locating resources that will facilitate building a collection and a library of folk songs from which effective and inspired teaching can be drawn. The varied types of resources are listed in this bibliography alphabetically regardless of media. The bibliography represents sources that are generally available. Thus, rare and difficult to find sources have been excluded. Some songs appear in multiple places with slightly variant titles. All songs included in the index have been listed with the original spelling from the source. Duplicates have been listed separately. Further work on this project should include an index of most difficult concepts and an index of classroom use. 

Bibliography of Folk Song Sources

Brinckmeyer, Lynn M., et al. Interactive Music: Powered by Silver Burdett with Alfred: Songbook, Vols K-6. New York: Pearson, 2016. 

Designed for student reading, this classroom textbook features a variety of songs from many sources including a sampling of international tunes, but is not entirely dedicated to folksongs. Brinckman et al, fourteen educators in total, have collaborated to assemble a collection of music that demonstrates pedagogical usefulness at the various grade levels. Some music is included from the Great American Songbook and pop music sources. Copyright information is included where required and each song credits the composer or, in the case of folksongs, country of origin where possible. This source contains music only, no other information, indices, or pedagogical use is included. Pieces are presented in standard notation with each song indicating where “do” is on the first staff, even when the song is minor or modal. Hardbound.

Bolkovac, Edward and Judith Johnson. 150 Rounds for Singing and Teaching. New York: Boosey & Hawkes U.S., 2004.

This is an excellent collection of rounds which have the added benefit of offering part work as well as pedagogical content. Indexes include: alphabetic, sacred, secular, topical, number of parts, meter, rhythmic elements, melodic elements, and scale forms. Paperback.

Choksy, Lois. The Kodály Context: Creating an Environment for Musical Learning. Englewood    Cliffs, N.J.: Prentice-Hall, 1981.

A textbook of Kodály philosophy and methodology, this book offers songs in context of the teaching process.  All songs are presented with a specific pedagogical purpose and written in staff notation.  Songs are unsourced but there are ten works cited in the acknowledgements section. An alphabetical list of songs is included but it does not reference the page numbers to find the songs on.  Paperback.

This text offers another in-depth study of the Kodály pedagogy approach.  Songs are printed in staff notation in order of difficulty in a designated section of the book. Each song has its tone set listed above. All songs are indexed alphabetically including page numbers. No source or bibliography information is provided. Paperback. 

Eisen, Ann, and Lamar Robertson. An American Methodology: An Inclusive Approach to Musical Literacy. 2nd ed. Lake Charles, LA.: Sneaky Snake Publications, 2010.

This textbook presents, as the title suggests, a methodology of Kodály-based music teaching in America.  The book offers detailed lesson plans and ideas as well as a chronology of concepts and suggested songs for teaching each of them.  Of particular value are the indices this book offers; these include: an alphabetic index of folk songs used in the book, each one, if not included in the Songs and Rhymes section, includes a source listing; index of instrumental and vocal art music used in this book; Songs and rhymes used in this book; a four-page bibliography of texts dedicated to folksongs and Kodály-inspired teaching.  Spiral bound.

Erdei, Péter, ed. 150 American Folk Songs to Sing, Read and Play. New York: Boosey & Hawkes, 1974.

One of the early staples of American Kodály Education, this text offers a wide variety of songs with varying degrees of difficulty and concepts included.  Songs are suitable for K-5 music teaching, though there are quite few for K-1 concepts.  All songs in this book are transposed to end on the note G regardless of the range with a CSP listed for each.  Songs are organized by tone set with an alphabetic index as well as an index of syllables, ranges, metres and games included. A bibliography with fifty-nine titles is included along with a discography of eleven recordings.  Finally, there is a section for educational resources that focus on Kodály inspired teaching.  Paperback.

Geoghegan, Lucinda. Singing Games and Rhymes for Tiny Tots Rev. ed. Glascow: National Youth Choir of Scotland, 2007.

This volume, for preschool children, includes many rhymes and fingerplays. Each song includes notes on performance with infants, toddlers, and children.  Songs and rhymes are listed in an alphabetical index. No source citations included. Spiral bound.  CD included.

____________. Singing Games and Rhymes for Early Years. Rev. ed. Polmont Scotland: National Youth Choir of Scotland, 2000.

Songs are presented one per page in staff notation in the key of the CSP.  Games or activities are included with most songs.  Each page has a section at the bottom with suggested standards the song addresses. The book is divided into subsections by difficulty: Preliminary; First Steps; and Off and Running.  Each subsection includes an assessment grid for keeping track of student progress on concepts roughly equivalent to U.S. Kodály kindergarten-first grade levels.  Songs are indexed alphabetically and by tone set.  Unsourced. Spiral bound. CD included.

This final book in the set of three offers songs featuring concepts for grades 3-5, although some are purely review.  Most songs include games or activities.  An alphabetic index is included as is a chart showing which songs have games, their respective tone set and rhythmic elements. Unsourced.  Spiral bound. CD included. 

Heath, Carol. The Song Garden Book 1. Columbus: The Kodály Musical Training Institute, 1984.

Books 1-3 are virtually identical in structure and will therefore be covered together under this heading.  Songs are presented one per page in whatever key renders no key signature for the song.  No analysis or game suggestions are given in these volumes; however, a separate Activities Book is also available. This online collection currently holds 415 folk songs.  The collection is searchable by song title and by sixteen other variables including rhythmic and melodic content and form.  All songs include a detailed analysis and region of origin.  Many songs also have games listed.

Houlahan, Mícheál, and Philip Tacka. Kodály Today: A Cognitive Approach to Elementary Music Education. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2008.

While not a significant source of notated folk songs, this text offers pedagogical methods and applications of a great many of the folk songs listed in the index below.  Hard bound and ebook versions available.   

Jones, Bessie, and Bess Lomax Hawes. Step It Down: Games, Plays, Songs, and Stories from the Afro-American Heritage. Athens, Ga.: University of Georgia Press, 1987.

This text offers a true secondary source of songs and associated games. Hawes has assembled a collection of tunes recorded and observed first hand from Bess Jones, a primary source and literal treasure trove of America’s folk songs. This book is much more than a source of folk songs for it reaches into the very culture from which they were taken.  Any serious student of folk songs will want this book in their collection for the songs, games and insight it offers. Songs are presented by types of games and activities they accompany. Book includes notes to scholars, annotations for each song, a selected bibliography, discography and alphabetical index. Paperback.

Locke, Eleanor G., and Robin Goodfellow, eds. Sail Away: 155 American Folk Songs to Sing, Read, and Play. Rev. ed. New York: Boosey & Hawkes, 1988.

All songs are in staff notation and keyed according to the CSP with major/minor key signatures. Songs are organized into fourteen groups based on difficulty and presented by toneset smallest to largest.  An index of tone sets, solfa, ranges, meters and games is included as well as an alphabetical index. There is a bibliography including fifty-eight titles and a discography of forty-two recordings.  Most songs include sources. Paperback.

Lomax, Alan. Cultural Equity: Research Center, Sound Recordings, “Alan Lomax Archives.” http://research.culturalequity.org/home-audio.jsp

          Only recently completed, the Alan Lomax sound recording archive is a treasure trove of American culture and history. The entire Lomax collection is available for search of song title, location, singer, date, or keyword. Lomax recorded over 17,400 audio segments which have been digitized and made available for public use bringing to pass the dream of Alan Lomax and his father, John that the cultural heritage belongs to the people and should be theirs to own. Researchers will find a huge amount of primary source material to survey for potential pedagogical use. Items from this resource are not listed in the current index.

McLatchey, Miriam. “My Song File: Music Resources for the Classroom.” http://mysongfile.com/index

Created by an elementary music teacher and her web-savvy husband, this site offers features to help users organize their own songs into an electronic filing cabinet. Users may search the database for song titles or key words. The site offers additional resources such as games, worksheets, and lesson extending activities. This website requires a free registration to take advantage of all features. Users are required to pay as they go for adding songs to their personal file cabinet or a lifetime subscription is available for $99. Sample files of all songs are available at no cost.

Roud, Steve. Vaughan Williams Memorial Library: Roud Folksong and Broadside Indexes http://www.vwml.org/search/search-roud-indexes

Holding nearly 25,000 songs, the Roud Index is an exhaustive folk song reference tool. The site doesn’t display the songs in notation; however, the usefulness of this site is that many sources, including books and recordings are cataloged for researchers to compare various sources for the same song. Songs with similar titles and are categorized with the same Roud Index number. Users may search by song title, first line, or other identifying information such as collector, singer, location or date collected. Many primary sources are listed to help students locate origins of folk songs. Songs from this site are not listed in the current index as the size would become prohibitive. 

Rohrbough, Lynn. Handy Play Party Book. Delaware: Informal Music. 1968.

This pocket-sized book was intended as a field manual for would-be play party hosts. Divided into two sections, the text contains 102 play party songs and fifty “Good Old Songs”.  Songs in the first section include detailed play party instructions and list original sources or collectors. Songs are indexed alphabetically for both sections separately. The second section, 50 Good Old Songs, includes songs only, many of which have sources listed. Comb binding.

Sams, Roger and BethAnn Hepburn. Purposeful Pathways Book 1. 2nd ed. Cleveland, Oh: MIE Publications, 2017

This useful series of books is intended as a lesson planning resource for elementary music educators. Songs are presented in standard notation and most have arrangements for Orff Schulwerk instrumentation. Most songs include games or activity suggestions. It should be noted that some entries are not folk songs but were written in the style thereof for pedagogical purposes. Book 1 includes songs with toneset: so, mi, la, do; rhythms: quarter, eighth, quarter rest, and half note. Each song includes various "pathways" that a teacher could pursue based on their goals for student learning (literacy, ensemble, partwork, improvisation, composition, etc.). Books contain indices that list songs by toneset, and rhythmic concept. A CD ROM is available with media files for use on Smart Board, Promethean, or with Microsoft PowerPoint.

Children of famed composer and folk song collector, Ruth Seeger, Mike and Peggy Seeger present a collection of folk songs recorded mostly with banjo, guitar, dulcimer and fiddle accompaniment while a fair number are unaccompanied voice.  Dialect and inflection are preserved with authentic style.  Available on vinyl, cassette, CD and mp3. 

Seeger, Ruth Crawford. American Folksongs for Children. New York: Doubleday & Company, Inc. 1948.

Print version of the above recorded songs. This text offers a wealth of research and pedagogical help by including a complete bibliography of sources as well as indices and chapters on how to use the songs. Ruth Seeger shares her wealth of practical knowledge of teaching and singing with children which is a delight to read. Indices include: Subject Index, Rhythmic Index, Tone Play, Finger Play, Name Play, Games, Small Dramas, and Quiet Songs. Songs are presented in standard notation with piano accompaniment and chord symbols. Hardbound and paperback.

Sharp, Cecil J., and Olive Dame Campbell. English Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians. New York: G.P. Putnam’s Sons, 1917.

This landmark effort by Cecil Sharp represents untold hours of recording, transcribing and cataloging efforts. Many songs include multiple variations found in different locations. Researchers will find notes on the songs and an alphabetic index of titles as well as a bibliography citing sources from the notes section. The King's Singers Book of Rounds, Canons, and Partsongs. Milwaukee: K.S. Music, 2002.

Folk Song collectors will find a variety of canons suitable for classroom use in this text. Place of origin is listed with each song but those that are composed are indicated as such. Songs are found in five categories: pre-1700 secular, pre-1700 sacred, post-1700, from around the world and wordless rounds. No index is printed in the text, and neither is there any bibliographic information. Paperback. 

Trinka, Jill. My Little Rooster, and other Folk Songs, Singing Games and Play Parties. Chicago: GIA Publications, 1987.

This text is the first in a set of four volumes by this author.  The text appears to have been produced on a typewriter and photocopied or mimeographed multiple times in publication.  Twenty-six songs are presented in hand-written stick notation only, six are offered in hand-written staff notation.  Partial analysis is included. Many songs have games or activities included.  Songs are listed alphabetically in the table of contents as well as in indexes including song type, grade level suggestions, meter, rhythmic motive, melodic content, and melodic motivic contour. Primary sources are cited when available. Spiral bound. CD available.

The site houses a database of over 15,000 folk song entries.  Songs are not presented in notation or audio format, however, each listing includes an exhaustive bibliography and discography.  Song background and origin are researched and presented with scholarly information. Songs from this site are not listed in the current index as the size would be prohibitive.
