Try also to repair the installation, if you upgraded from 1.6.8 or 1.6.9. Just re-launch the TortoisSVN installer and choose "Repair". There are known problems with overlay icons and TortoiseSVN upgrades (see this blog post).
I recently switched my icon themes as I'm not a big fan of the default icon theme that comes with it. However, I would like to change only the folder icons to something that better suits my personal preferences.
Folder Icons

I have searched for a solution to this problem online, but most of the results suggest changing the entire icon theme or using a different file manager. However, I would like to keep the default folder icon theme and file manager, but just change the folder icons.
Any way to embed (or permanently change) folder icons (or folder thumbnail images) on file folders on an external hard drive so that the picture will be shown on all computers that access the drive and not just the computer that made the icon change? i.e., I change the folder icons on my computer, then want them to stay with the folders on the drive and not in the root sys 32 batch defaults folder icon in Windows.
I have a few folders on an external drive that I want to save folder icons for. By using Paint save as .ico bmp image, then embed these onto the drive and assign these icons to the folders and have whoever accesses these files be able to see the embedded folder pictures.
I tried all the approaches listed. It works great on the computer that I default with. When I plug the external hard drive into my wife's computer, everything is defaulted to her Vista defaults (or Windows icons and images).
And while cstomizing a folder via Properties also helps. However I noticed a problem when using Desktop.ini. It references the absolute path to the folder icon/logo.... and the drive letter for the external hard drive may not be the same when viewed from other computers.
With Windows 10 and 11 machines that I've tried this on, for some reason, it still has the generic folder icon in explorer after making this change. To fix that I have to go to the folder properties, and on the "Customize" tab, where it shows my folder.ico even though it isn't actually used in the Explorer view. I choose "Change Icon", hit "Restore Defaults," and then Cancel (or push Esc) so that it doesn't actually change back to default and overwrite that desktop.ini. After that it actually uses the icon which it already should have been using.
But that's only for the same machine, since it had already loaded a view with the default folder icon; when the drive is on a new computer they should all show the correct icon right off the bat when it first scans the folder.
I will be a bit more precise. I have a few folders on an external drive that I want to save folder icons for. By using paint save as .ico bmp image. then embed these onto the drive and assign these icons to the folders and have all that access these files to see the embedded folder pics.
How can I change my Dropbox folder icons and use my own icons? Until recently, I could change icons to my own icon picture, which made working quicker. I use Mac OS Mojave on a MacBook Pro, and use Dropbox from my Mac OS desktop finder window. As of the second week of October, all my icons reverted to generic folder icons and I am not able to change them. Is there a new method, or is there a new Dropbox download that I need? How can I again change my folder icons? (10/24/19)
Hi,@TedC I'm having the same problem, so I tried your suggestion and installed the software update/ beta version. All my custom icons are still missing... which is a pretty huge pain in the butt because we're talking about hundreds of files that I spent a lot of time organizing with custom icons. Any other ideas of something I could try? Also, suddenly this dialogue box has come up on my last couple of re-starts: Dropbox needs to change permissions for the FolderL/Users/[myname]/Dropbox??? I enter the password as prompted, but just not sure why it's suddenly happening and if it has anything to do with my icon issue.
Hey @TedC I'm having a similar issue with my business dropbox account regarding being able to change the folder icons. I can change them on my personal account. I'm the Admin of my business account so I'm not sure why I can't. Can you please help? Thank you!
Wouldn't it be fairly simple, and not break current behavior, if Thunar and the XFCE Desktop simply looked for a file in folders called .xfce-custom-folder-icon that contained the name of the icon you want displayed for that folder?
xfdesktop does support custom folders as of version 4.11.0. Simply put a jpg file in the same folder with the name either folder.jpg, cover.jpg, albumart.jpg, or fanart.jpg and it will become the folder icon on the desktop (commit).
Can anyone one point out to any reference or let me know how the default dam folder icons can be replaced? I know that following are the list of icons that are available. But how can I change default folder icon to the icon of my choice? Any help is really appreciated!
Thanks for the quick reply! I was looking for the file from which icon="folder" is getting applied, so that I can overlay the same file and modify the folder icon as per my requirement. However, after little bit of more research I could find the file I was looking for. Here is the file path:
The folder icons have vanished from my macbook air. The titles are still there and you can double-click them to open, but not on the space above where the icon should be. New folders have the same problem.
I didn't notice what i'd done recently when the folders started to disappear, but imagine I probably downloaded a software update or similar. I've tried a restart and making sure all software is up to date. My history is mainly on PCs so I'm not certain how best to tackle this. I saw cache emptying mentioned on some fora, but mine has very little and nothing larger than 1MB, so not sure if that will help?
Thanks v much for the advice; just tried to do it but unfortunately my 'view options' menus for both finder and desktop only have two tick boxes - "show item info" and "show icon preview". I should have said that I do have icons still for the Hard Disk and documents themselves are unaffected, just the folders... a bit mysterious!
@josiah and I have been collaborating on animating the icons in my collections. For the ease of keeping current, and doing updates, the both of us have created Github repos. You can think of Josiah's icons as the initial animated icons, my Github are the same icons (plus a couple of my own) that are in the various color schemes.
Josiah is taking requests for animating icons. But you have to provide him with the vector artwork. If you are NOT able to create the vector icons, I am happy to take on those requests. Please leave a post on this thread with your idea.
This is my first try at a Category Docker Folder icons. I have done it in two color versions. Please understand that I only use the "Light Theme". I am not sure how these would look like on the Dark Theme.
I made them svgs originally to take advantage of the hover effect so it would only animate on mouseover: aggregators-hover.svg. However, it's not working in my unraid GUI for whatever reason, so I just made it so they always animate. You can do the same thing with a gif, but a gif would be a lot harder to change the colors on. You can do super complex stuff with gifs a lot easier though. For instance, I wanted a spinning globe for a remote folder. Doing that with an svg is kind of a nightmare if you want it to have the depth necessary to look like it's actually spherical, so I just made a gif:
Hey it really love your icons the animations are just so cool, my only thing is that i feel it gets a bit to busy with them animating all the time.
When i saw your original intent was to only animate on hover i was like please please can i have.
After a bit of playing found out that if you use and object instead of img it will animate on hover.
Will make it use object instead of img for svgs next update
I am afraid i know less than you but i would really like that. I am actually still using your icon pack as it covers more of my bases and i really like the consistent look across all of the icons. I really like the idea of the pirate and other eye icon blinking. I think it would be cool to get both of the clouds moving, maybe at different speeds or directions. For the database one maybe have the discs separate and come back together?
On a fresh install, when you open Nautilus, you see your Home folder. It has several default folders with special icons, such as Downloads, Music, Pictures, etc. They are also bookmarked, so that you can see them on the sidebar. Actually two different icons are displayed : in the main panel, this is the places/64/folder-music.svg that is displayed. In the sidebar, this is places/16/folder-music.svg
I deleted this Music folder. I created it again, and customized the icon using /usr/share/icons/Humanity/places/64/folder-music.svg But in the sidebar, the icon is a resized version of this one, not the 16 version !
Finally, I figured it out by myself (or, to be honest, with help from an ArchLinux forum). So, in the sidebar, this special folders are not under "Bookmarks" but under "Computer". To include custom folders in this list, you have to edit ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs. 5376163bf9
