# Privacy Policy — Focus Reader

Focus Reader is designed to work entirely on your own device. This policy
explains exactly what the app does and doesn't do with your data.
## Summary
Focus Reader has no backend server, no account system, and no analytics or
tracking SDKs. Everything you paste, import, or record stays on your device
unless you explicitly turn on one of the optional features below — and even
then, data goes directly from your device to a destination *you* choose, not
to us. We (the developer) never receive, see, or store any of your data.
## What's stored locally, on your device only
- The text you paste or import, and your reading progress
- App settings (theme, font, speeds, feature toggles)
- Reading analytics (words read, words-per-minute, session history)
- Pomodoro session counts
This is stored using your browser's/WebView's local storage. It never
leaves your device unless you explicitly export it (Settings → Backup →
Export JSON) to share between your own devices.
## Optional features that send data off-device
These are all off by default. Each one only activates if you deliberately
turn it on and configure it.
**AI summaries & quizzes.** If you enter your own Anthropic API key in
Settings, the text you're reading is sent directly from your device to
Anthropic's API to generate a summary or quiz. Your API key is stored only
in local app storage on your device. We never see this key or this traffic
— it goes straight from your device to Anthropic. See

how they handle that request.
**Local comprehension questions (Ollama).** If you configure a local Ollama
server address in Settings (typically one you run yourself, e.g. in Termux
on the same phone), the paragraph you just read is sent to that server to
generate a comprehension question. This is a server you control; by default
it's not reachable outside your own device/network.
**Repeat Sentence practice (speech-to-text).** If you enable this feature,
the app requests microphone access to transcribe you repeating a sentence
back, so it can show which words matched. Transcription happens through
Android's built-in speech recognition service (or, in a desktop/mobile
browser instead of the packaged app, your browser's built-in speech
recognition) — the same system-level service used by any other app on your
device that uses speech-to-text. We do not receive the audio or the
transcript; it's processed by the OS/browser's speech service and the
result is used only within the app, on your device.
## Permissions
- **Microphone (`RECORD_AUDIO`)** — only used when you actively use Repeat
Sentence practice, and only while you're recording.
- **Internet** — used only for the optional features above, and to load a
handful of open-source libraries (for reading PDF/DOCX/EPUB files) and
fonts from public CDNs. No traffic is sent for the app's core reading
features (paste text, read, repeat, highlight) — those work fully offline.
## Children
Focus Reader doesn't collect personal information from anyone, including
children, and has no account or login system.
## Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the "Last updated" date above will change too.
