In our Class Archive, we are highlighting the learning, activities, and creative development that took place within our classroom throughout the quarter. Throughout the quarter, students had the opportunity to learn from a variety of guest speakers, such as Sandra Treviño, Sarah Conway, and Carolina Sternberg. Staff from Lumpen Radio and Dr. Yoalli Rodriguez Aguilera were critical in the creation of the collaborative projects; their presence helped students connect classroom learning to original pieces.

Week 1 - Introduction
Students were introduced to the goals and structure of the course and began building a foundation for storytelling. The first creative writing exercise was centered on an object that represented 'home' to them! Students recorded and shared with each other as an introduction to the storytelling that would take place as the weeks went along!
Week 2 - Archive of the Young Lords Visit + Orality
During week 2, as a class, we had the opportunity to visit the Archive of the Young Lords at DePaul's JRT Library! Here, they dove deep into the history of activism tied to the Young Lords' work, allowing them to see how social change was being understood back then.
Stephanie Manriquez gave students an introductory presentation on the work of Lumpen Radio, allowing them to start getting knowledge on our community partner! Our Student Fellow, Luz Perez, also gave a presentation on the concept of Orality, pushing them to think of how spoken knowledge is as important as written one, and why a medium such as radio is important.
Week 3 - Gentrification, Young Lord's Art Exhibit & Project Planning
Carolina Sternberg, our first guest speaker, spoke on issues of redevelopment and gentrification in Chicago neighborhoods such as Pilsen and Little Village. Students had the opportunity to learn a bit more about an issue heavily affecting our Chicago Latino communities. Our class also had the opportunity to visit DePaul's Museum exhibit on the Young Lords, connecting them back to our archival visit. During this week, students also began to share potential ideas for the final project!
Week 4 - Interviewing, Outlining & Script Development
Sandra Treviño, our second guest speaker, spoke with students about her work as a journalist. Students had the opportunity to ask her about her interviewing process, which provided them with useful insights for their own interviews.
Stephanie Manriquez gave students a presentation on the process of creating an audio story, which helped students as they began the outlining process of their audio stories!
Week 5 - Ethical Practices of Interviewing & Community Interviews
Professor Yoalli spoke with students on the ethical practices of interviewing, which helped them prepare for their interactions with those they would be interviewing! Charly Garcia, from the Lumpen Radio team, gave students a presentation on how to utilize audio equipment. Students, with what was learned in class, spent the rest of the week dedicated to gathering their interview audios for their projects!
Week 6 - Draft Development & Audio Editing
August Abitang, part of the Lumpen Radio team, presented students with audio editing techniques, as well as useful websites and applications for them to use. Students began to edit their audio files to fit the script they previously worked on. By the end of the week, students had what could be considered their second draft of their audio stories!
Week 7 - Investigative Journalism
Sarah Conway, a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter, our third guest speaker, shared with students more about her journalism journey by analyzing some of her examples of community reporting. Students continued to work on revising and recording their final audio scripts, focusing on making sure they were centering advocacy and voice within their work!
Week 8 - Final Project Workshop
With the help of the Lumpen Team, students had a final project workshop during class, which allowed them to ask questions and gather feedback that could help them strengthen their audio pieces before submitting their final version!
Week 9/10 - Peer Review & Event Planning
The last two weeks of the quarter consisted of students submitting their drafts of their audio projects and engaging in a listening session, where they listened to each group's work and offered any final feedback. Using everything they had learned through the editing process and from each other, students submitted their final pieces and worked on getting ready for our Final Public Event!
Week 11 - Public Event
Our quarter culminated at Lumpen Radio with our Final Event, where each group shared their audio piece during a live broadcast!
