He was born in Gimhae, Gyeongsang Province, and spent much of his academic and professional career moving from place to place. He studied and worked in various locations including Masan, Seoul, Suwon, Singal, Gumi, and Daejeon until he obtained his doctorate at the age of 30. His doctorate in science was earned in 1997 from KAIST, through research on bacterial cell wall synthase. The same year, he began his post-doctoral work at NIH-NIDDK in the United States, where he focused on studying the reaction mechanism of tryptophan synthase, a bacterial enzyme involved in tryptophan biosynthesis. In 1999, he moved to NIH-NCI, where he continued his research in molecular cell biology, specifically studying genes related to the cell division cycle of yeast. In 2002, he returned to South Korea as a senior researcher at KRIBB. Later, in September 2004, he transferred to the Department of Microbiology at Gyeongsang National University, where he has since focused on researching the molecular biology of porridge mushrooms. Currently, his research involves studying the transformation, diversity, and function of enzymes derived from mushrooms through subjective examination.
