The British colonial administration set up the Uganda Broadcasting Service in 1954. The primary goal was to support the colonial agenda of the then-current government. The station primarily broadcast news from the external service of the BBC and other programmes. UBS was also instrumental in silencing the pro-independence movement at the time. After independence, UBS was renamed Radio Uganda.[4] Up until the 1980s, both radio and television units were seen as government mouthpieces.[4]

The Uganda Broadcasting Corporation owns five radio stations, three of them general and two of them exclusively over FM (Star FM in Luganda and Magic FM which started in mid-2008). The three core networks were the Red network (North/West Nile, in English, Alur, Kakwa, Kinubi, Lugbara, Madi and Luo), the Blue network (Central/Southern, in Runyoro-Rutoro, Luganda, Rwamba, Rukonzo, Urufumbira and Ruruli) and the Butebo network (East/Northeast, in Lusoka, Nyakarimojong, Ateso, Kumam, Lumasaba, Lunyole-Lusamia, Lugwe, Adhola, Kupsabiny and Lugwere). These networks are grouped according to the primary languages spoken in their respective areas.[4]

The content was broadcast by Kapchorwa Trinity Radio and presenters received intensive training on engaging with farmers and incorporating interactive tools such as beep-to-vote and SMS polling into their segments. A key component of the initiative was gathering and acting on feedback and the study identified a particularly heartwarming instance of how this translated into on-ground action. When monitoring officers found out that certain villages did not have radio connectivity, a District Assistant Forestry Officer began recording the programmes on a solar-powered radio and delivering them directly to farmers on his boda boda (motorbike).

As a second treatment, we will also develop an informational talk radio show, which will feature factual information on refugees in Uganda. By providing information on topics that may be of concern to Ugandans, such as the number of refugees in Uganda and their skill level, impacts of refugees on local economies, and refugee use of public goods and basic services, this program will aim to dispel common misconceptions about refugees.

At the pilot stage, we will develop pilot episodes of each radio program, and test them on a small sample of Ugandans for comprehension and short-term effects. In a planned full study following our proposed small-scale pilot, we will employ a regression discontinuity design combined with a randomized experiment to measure the effect of airing the radio programs.

The Government of Uganda, through the Office of the Prime Minster and the Ministry of Health, continues to spread the Nutrition Now campaign messages using its free airtime on different radio stations across the country.

Faith Radio began involvement in Christian radio in Africa in 2005. Scott Beigle, President of Faith Radio, was confronted with the need in Kenya, Africa for Christian radio. At the end of March 2005, Scott Beigle and a team of listeners, 14 in all, went on a mission trip to Kenya, Africa. The Faith Radio listeners began to donate funds to erect a Christian radio station in Kenya, Africa. During the mission trip, much preparation work was done for this station, and just days after returning to the U.S., "Imani" Radio ("Faith" in the Swahili language) went on the air. A 2000-watt station with its tower on top of a mountain now reached a potential 7.2 million listeners. Africans are greatly receiving the ministry of Imani Radio.

Thousands of solar-powered transistor radios, pre-tuned only to Imani Radio, have also been purchased by Faith Radio listeners and distributed in Africa to those in the bush and mountain regions where there is no electricity and to the very poorest who cannot purchase their own radio. Bibles in both Swahili and English also have been donated to give out. Many Africans have not the financial means to have their own Bible. It is our desire to continue to support this great mission work in Africa as much as possible.

Our involvement in African Christian radio is definitely a work of faith. The Africans because they live in Third World Countries have very little, and so financial support from among Africans is minimal, though we continue to seek to help them understand the principle of giving. Pray for this great work, especially the financial means to keep it going.

Adventist World Radio (AWR) continues to support radio projects in the Uganda Union and set up new projects in unentered parts of the country. Radio evangelism has been a significant factor in the recent membership growth in the nation. In fact, radio ministry in Uganda played a huge role in the record-breaking baptism of almost 50,000 during Total Member Involvement (TMI) campaigns.

Ray Allen director of AWR Global Training, recently visited the area and applauded the Uganda Union for its innovation in radio evangelism after conducting a site survey of all four Ugandan radio stations: Prime Radio, Light FM, Ebenezer and Maranatha.

Many converts in the Rwenzori Field are crediting Light FM as their first source of the Adventist message. Baluku, a Catholic scholar baptized as a result of the radio ministry, said that as he tried tuning his radio set, he found Light FM. The music and the messages sounded authentic. For the first time, he heard about the Sabbath and other biblical truths unique to the Adventist faith.

AWR aspires to extend radio coverage to northern Uganda. For 20 years, this area was embroiled in a civil war. Not only was the region affected economically, but church growth slowed dramatically. It remains a mostly unentered area, according to the Uganda Union Adventist Mission.

Radio is changing that. Many people have already been introduced to biblical truths on the airwaves, and they want to learn more when a public evangelism campaign begins. In this way, radio usage has contributed to sharp growth in church membership, which stands now at about 24,000.

Radio Pacis is a community based radio located in Arua, Uganda, East Africa. Founded by the Catholic Diocese of Arua, the radio seeks to bring the Peace of Christ for all. As a community based radio, the programming is designed for the integral development of the listeners. The programmes seek to entertain as well as educate and to provide information in creative ways that are attractive to the listeners.

Oxfam and our local partner CEFORD have been supporting the radio shows, but not by simply handing them a check to cover costs. Our goal in Uganda and beyond is to help important local organizations engaged with an emergency to become stronger, more effective, and more sustainable. So, through an initiative known as ELNHA (Empowering Local and National Humanitarian Actors), we have offered trainings in humanitarian response, financial systems, advocacy, strategic planning, and proposal-writing. One of the Radio Pacis journalists had a chance to spend time in a drought-affected region of the country, to deepen his understanding of humanitarian emergencies and response.
