Hi, I have just (Oct 10 2012) bought a secondhand APC 1500Va Smart UPS which had new batteries fitted in Feb 2012. The seller confirms it was done and has the battery purchase receipt.


After fitting to my computer installation and running a self test which was fine, the PowerChute software, in the Risk Assessment page, warns that there is a 'Battery Age' issue and says the batteries are 8.02 years old.


I would have thought that the APC system would recognise new batteries and auto re-set the battery age. What should have been done when the batteries were fitted, and what do I do now to reset the battery age clock ?? The APC manual is remarkably unhelpful about anything other than normal routine useage.


In a Google search I read that a manual re-calibration can be done but warns to only do this as last resort as it reduces battery life. It says to attach a min static 30% load,remove UPS power supply and let the UPS power the load until battery exhausted, then recharge.


Is this really what has to be done to reset the battery age clock ?? It seems an archaic method considering the unit has sophisticated monitoring software. In the UPS information, it says that batteries were fiited at the date the unit was manufactured - 09/01/2004

Just wanted to add that calibrations shouldn't be done more than once or twice a year unless you have a reporting problem with runtime. If the UPS/software is reporting accurate runtime based on your load, doing a runtime cal will only cause "wear and tear" on your battery. Depending on who you talk to, doing a runtime cal on a new battery may or may not be necessary but I personally don't suggest doing them period unless your runtime is way off.

i think also this system has a field where you can tell it you replaced the batteries. the UPS does not have the ability to auto-update the battery replacement date. within powerchute, make sure it is set to show advanced options and then see if you can update the battery replacement date.

I'm really surprised to not be able install Unity connection 8.02 on ESXi 4.0 update 1. I have the message : "product not supported on current hardware : Cisco Unity connection". So it's possible to install CUCM 8.02 and Business Edition version on VMware ESXi 4.0 update 1.

I'm ok on the fact that I will not be supported. The problem I have actually is I cannot continue to install : I have only 2 choices. I can only install CUCM or CUCM business ed. So the question is how to get the option to install Unity connection, since I have the message : products not supported on current hardware".

I work for CLP in Warsaw, Poland... CS HECTOR... I need to prepare lab equipment for new labs to deliver new version (v.8) of new voice courses... ICOMM, CAPPS, CIPT, CVOICE, TVOICE... In ICOMM and CAPPS CUCv8 is needed in labs, but... but I cannot install CUC using VMWare ESXi 4.0... We bought NFR Kit... DVD disc includes CUCM, CUCMBE and CUC 8.0(2c)... I can install only CUCM and CUCMBE.. CUC like in previous posts in this topic is not allowed... I played with different settings of RAM, HDD... I changed RHE system from 3 to 4 like I saw in .ova file downloaded from CCO... Still nothing... What to do? Please help... We would like to start to teach new courses asap... I think, for Cisco it is important as well..

I've got four servers with VMWare ESXi, one server per pod... each with one quad-core processor and 8 GB of RAM... unfortunately cannot add more RAM, or one more processor.... I'm affraid of resources if I would like to run four images per server (CUCM, CUC, CUP and MS-AD) in ICOMM or CAPSS courses.. CUC needs in this solution two processors and 4 GB RAM... CUCM next processor and 2 GB RAM... and still I need resources for two more virtual machines... I'll check it leater.. maybe it can works... let you know...

The shift to online learning this past spring presented many challenges to students. Of particular concern are our most vulnerable students, as research has shown that they are often most negatively impacted in online learning. In 8.02, a General Institute Requirement (GIR) physics class that all students must take to graduate, a one-on-one mentoring program was introduced to improve self-efficacy and STEM identity of students who were struggling to pass the class after the first exam. Professor Ed Bertschinger delivered a webinar on Tuesday, July 7 about the 8.02 mentoring program, talking more about the implementation of the program and its promising results.

Belonging, self-efficacy, and STEM identity are important psychological factors in learning, and mentorship helps with these aspects. Mentoring is not tutoring, though it can include tutoring; rather, mentoring is a professional working alliance where individuals work together over time to support the personal and professional development of the mentee. Effective mentorship includes psychological/emotional support, role modeling, and skill development; mentees benefit most from engaging with a mentor who shares values and has deep-level similarity with them. It is only after emotional support and role modeling are established that skill development can truly blossom in a mentoring relationship. The 8.02 mentoring program had 23 mentors (with additional mentors held in reserve) and 88 mentees who attended at least 3 sessions. For mentor training, mentors went through a practice workshop where they watched 4 brief mentor/mentee skits and discussed them with each other, and then roleplayed in groups as the mentor, mentee, and observer to provide different perspectives. Mentors also looked at sample mentoring compacts, which are agreements between mentors and mentees to set expectations and goals for their relationship.

The 8.02 mentoring program met goals of improving mentee performance as well as their self-efficacy and STEM identity. The program also established a community of practice for mentors, and both mentors and mentees reported high satisfaction with the program. The accountability created by having weekly scheduled meetings was good for mentees, and a lot of the learning gain may have come from increased conceptual understanding rather than the development of general problem solving skills. Additionally, 1:1 mentoring was more effective than group mentoring because the 1:1 relationship allowed students to be more vulnerable in sharing their challenges.

The 8.02 mentoring program is adaptable to other settings. The success of the program provides hope for the implementation of a similar program in a different context to help more students. A planning guide and training materials are currently available with an evaluation report coming soon.

Higher biodiversity in forests has been shown to positively influence multiple ecosystem services. However, globally, forest diversity is declining due to widespread deforestation, degradation and fragmentation. Consequently, there is widespread concern over a potentially dramatic degradation of forest ecosystem functioning and service provision. In particular, the ability of forests to resist and recover from disturbance, i.e., their resilience, may be jeopardized if biodiversity continues to decline. Indeed, the rapid pace of global change is altering disturbance regimes in forests (e.g. wildfires, droughts, disease). Thus, identifying relationships between forest biodiversity and resilience to global change has become a major challenge in forest science.

This research group encourages and supports co-operation among forest scientists with the aim of quantifying the relationships between forest compositional, structural, and functional diversity and resilience.

Forest resilience can be defined as the capacity of a forest to resist and absorb disturbance and return, over time, to its pre-disturbance state. Global change factors, such as climate warming, habitat loss, and invasive species introductions are altering the frequency, intensity, and timing of forest disturbances. Despite the widely held belief that diverse forests are more resilient to major disturbances (Thompson et al. 2009), a recent review and meta-analysis (Ibez et al, 2019) reported that quantitative assessments of forest diversity-resilience relationships are lacking. For example, although a large body of research has addressed the role of species diversity on forest resistance to disturbance, relatively few studies have attempted to quantify forest resilience post disturbance. Furthermore, evidence on the relationship between forest biodiversity and resilience comes predominantly from studies in Western Europe and North America, with many regions and biomes underrepresented. Thus, many key questions remain unanswered. Should the evaluation of resilience be based on the recovery of key species or whole ecosystems? How can forest diversity be managed to enhance resilience? Does forest diversity contribute to the resilience of forest-based livelihoods and socio-economic activity following major disturbances?
