Paragliding Sites and 3D thermal

As a paragliding pilot, I love exploring different flying sites.

There are questions in my mind while planning a trip to a new country/region/site:

  • When is the best season/month to do XC flying in Davos, Switzerland?

  • Where is the easiest place to get my first 100k flight in Austria?

  • I have one week vacation planned in late April for xc flying and I have to book in advance. Where should I go?

  • Which site in the Alps have the most flyable days in May?

  • How the thermal flow with terrain? What are the usual thermal triggers near a site?

  • .....

I can get these information by visiting different club websites, forums and doing a lot of search on XContest. But it takes a lot of time and effort.

As a software engineer, I realized I am able to get these information from XContest automatically, by writing some simple code. I put the results on the maps to make exploring and viewing easier. It looks cool and I decided to share it to public.

You can click links on the left to see paragliding sites for Switzerland, Austria, Italy, France, Slovenia, Germany, Pyrenees on a map. It's better to view the map on desktop.

By clicking on the place marker, you can see statistics about this site, including "largest distance", "best months for XC", "num of 100k flights" etc. There are also spreadsheet data where you can sort sites by different attributes.

update: I did a bit more coding to find out 3D thermal points. Have a look at 3D Thermal page.

On map, you can see Cimetta in Ticino is best for XC in April, but the most flyable days are in July and August.

You can get a lot more info from the spreadsheet by some simple sorting.

When you sort by "Xcontest days per year", you will find the most "popular" and "flyable" sites in Switzerland.

If you love this website, save it to bookmarks and share it to your friends.
