Thursday, November 9th
The Central Coast Fly Fishers September General Meeting will be November 9th at the OSU Extension Center, 1211 SE Bay Blvd., Newport, 5:30.

All club family members and significant others are welcome and encouraged to come. Please let Tom know if you plan to attend, if you have not already done so. We need to have a count of how many people will participate in order to have adequate supplies on hand.
This is an in-person-only meeting, with no Zoom. There will be cookies at the meeting, along with coffee, water, and sodas. There will be door prizes (tickets $1 each or six tickets for $5). Remember to bring a fly for the "Fish-on-a-Fly" drawing and take all of the flies home.

December we will not have our regular meeting or fly tying. Instead we will have our Holiday potluck dinner and party Friday, December 8th at the OSU Extension office. Tom will have a sign-up sheet at the November meeting and will send out an e-mail after the meeting. We need to know how many people will attend in order to buy turkeys and hams for the dinner.
The November Fly Tying Session will be Thursday, November 16th, 5:30 p.m., at the OSU Extension Office in Newport. The address for the OSU Extension office is 1211 SE Bay Blvd.
Neal is going to lead the November fly tying session. He would like to know whether tyers would like to work on parachute flies or soft hackle flies.
Tom will take a poll at the regular meeting. If you cannot attend the November General Meeting, please e-mail Tom, tomp345@gmail with your choice.

The regular monthly meeting will be Thursday, February 12th, 5:30 p.m., at the OSU Extension Office in Newport. The address for the OSU Extension office is 1211 SE Bay Blvd.
This month's general meeting will feature winter steelhead techniques to get your fly deeper, general fly fishing help, and open discussion.
This is an in-person-only meeting, with no Zoom. There will be cookies at the meeting, along with coffee, water, and sodas. There will be door prizes (tickets $1 each or 6 tickets for $5). Remember to bring a fly for the "Fish-on-a-Fly" drawing and take all of the flies home.
The regular monthly fly tying session will be Thursday, February 16th, 5:30 p.m., at the OSU Extension Office in Newport, 1211 SE Bay Blvd. This month's tying session will be led by Neal Rea. He'll tie parachute flies--no specific pattern, but a good learning experience with posts and parachute hackle.
Parachute Flies
These flies are easier to see on the water than ordinary dry flies. Their white "parachute" makes them stand out so that they can be seen even in riffles. The trick to tying them is learning how to prepare a post and tie the parachute hackle. The same tying method works for all parachute flies, so this month's tying session will make it possible for you to tie any dry fly parachute style.
First, the free fly tying classes for beginners will be Saturdays, 9-12, February 4 and 11. Several people have signed up, so we will need club members to assist the new tiers on a one-to-one basis. Contact Tom, tomp345@gmail.com, if you can help.
The fly for the regular monthly tying session February 16th will be decided during the February 9th general meeting. We'll send out an e-mail with the pattern dressing prior to the tying session.
Don't forget: it's time to renew memberships, which are still only $25.00 for a family membership or $10.00 for students. Since we are a charter club of FFI, membership in FFI is also required. If anyone has problems paying both dues, please contact me. We have resources to help.
To download a full-sized version of the form, right-click on it and select "save." It will appear in your downloads folder, show up at the far left of the bottom line on your monitor.
This is the time for winter steelhead fishing, and this is the perfect rod:
G. Loomis, 3-piece, 14', 9/10 wt., great for Alsea, Siletz, or Nestucca, only $350, with $100 going to the club. Includes rod sock and aluminum tube. I'll include a dozen steelhead flies. Contact Marty Sherman, 541-614-1252 or martysherman@charter.net.
Members are encouraged to send fishing reports (with photos if possible) and notices of items for sale or invitations to go fishing to joycesherman@charter.net for inclusion in the March newsletter.

The regular monthly fly tying session will be Thursday, March 17th, 5:30 p.m., at the OSU Extension Office in Newport, 1211 SE Bay Blvd. Doug Canfield has chosen the A P Nymph, originally created by Andy Puyans, an "All Purpose" nymph. Here's a link to some interesting information about A P Nymphs, as well as several variations to tie: https://flyfishingthesierra.com/apnymph.htm. Pick one to tie, and bring materials for that version--all the versions are tied the same way.

This is an opportunity for all of us to tie some flies for future use and to maintain or improve our tying skill. There will be tools and materials available for new tiers--you are welcome to bring your own equipment if you prefer. Marty Sherman will be available to help any new tiers. The February fly tying session was well attended (photo below).
It's time to renew your membership with the club for 2022. The membership is still $25 for an annual individual/family membership. Since we are a Fly Fishers International (FFI) charter club, membership in FFI is necessary.
Central Coast Fly Fishers and FFI are non-profit organizations under section 501(c)3 of the IRS code, so all membership dues are tax deductible.
Attached is a PDF Membership renewal form. You can bring this to the next meeting or mail it with your payment to:

Waldport, OR 97394
Note: If you do not intend to renew your club Membership, please let me know: tomp345@gmail.com.
Pontoon Boats
The club received two pontoon boat donations: a Dave Scadden Outlaw Renegade donated by Al Szal and a Hobie Float Cat 75 donated by Julie Otrugman. Both boats can be used on lakes and moving water (depending on your skill). We are offering the boats to club members first. You can look these up online and see the photos included.
The Outlaw Renegade is 8' long, includes a set of oars, seat, one side bag, an anchor system, and air pump. The boat had an issue with varmints and had several holes which have been patched. One of the pontoons has a very slow leak that I cannot find. It does not go flat and holds flotation air for 6 to 8 hours. Plenty of time for a day of fishing. Due to the condition of the slow leak, we are pricing the boat at $300.00. This is a steal for this boat.
The Hobie Float Cat 75 is a hard shell pontoon boat. It comes with oars and the seat was changed by Sener to a molded, folding, non-padded seat. We are pricing this boat at $300.00.
If you are interested in either of these boats, please contact Tom (tomp345@gmail.com) to set up a time to look at them.
Drift Boat Oars

Rio Shooting Head Saltwater Fly Line
ST10I, new in box. Club Price: $25 ($10 will go to the club).
Rio Weight Forward 7 Floating Fly Line
New in box. Club Price: $25 ($10 will go to the club).
For all four of these items, contact Marty Sherman, 541-614-1252 or martysherman@charter.net
Julie Otrugman donated all of Sener's fly fishing gear to the club. We have been selling the items to raise money for scholarships at Oregon Coast Community College, where Julie and Sener both taught classes. There were two advance sales for club members, plus the Lower Umpqua Fly Fishing Expo last Saturday. That $1,570 brings the current total for the scholarship fund to $4,877. We still have a lot of items to sell. I will be looking for ideas on how to sell the rest of the items. Thanks to all who have helped: sorting the items, helping sell them, and purchasing some! There are still some nice items, including several reels and wading/outdoor gear. Most of the rods have been sold, but there's still lots of fly tying materials. When you buy any of these donated items, please remember that the purpose of the sale is to raise money for the scholarship fund!
Saturday, February 26, several CCFF club members went to Reedsport for the Lower Umpqua Fly Fishing Expo. There were many fly tyers, including Mike Flaming (former member whom I tried to get to join again), raffles, door prizes, and items for sale. We did very well at the Expo selling Sener's items donated by Julie Otrugman.
March 19, Winston Community Center, 9:00-6:00
This is a festival focused upon Veterans! Umpqua Valley Fly Fishers and the newly-formed Fly Fishing Veterans division of the club will sponsor this event to benefit our veterans' activities, classes, and outings. Tying sessions will be at 9:00, 10:00, 11:00, 2:00 and 4:00, with lunch at 1:00. Tiers will donate their flies to the Fly Fishing Veterans for their outings and/or fund-raising activities. There will be rod building demonstrations. Casting sessions will be ongoing, with some outdoor time, weather permitting. Some nice equipment will go to raffle winners. For more information, please contact Doug Myers, 1-909-938-8627;r dougmyers@flyfishingveterans.org, or go to www.flyfishingveterans.org.

???, Sener Otrugman, Warren White, and John Sorensen tying the Sand Crab during the August tying session. Marty and Joyce Sherman were also present.
CANCELED: Saturday, September 18th, at Big Creek Park, Newport.
The August surf perch fishing outing at Lost Creek south of Newport didn't result in anyone actually landing a surf perch, but the weather couldn't have been better and everyone seemed to have a good time casting while the sand was sucked away from under their feet. Roger Brockway was encouraged by a couple of grabs, but neither resulted in him bringing a fish to hand. The event was enjoyed by Tom Peck, John and Barb Sorensen, Sener and Julie Otrugman, Dennis Engeldorf, Roger Brockway, and Joyce Sherman. It's very easy to feel very small when facing the Pacific, as Dennis Engeldorf is doing in the photo below!
This is a picture of myself and a 50 lb. Bull Dorado I caught a few years ago, when fishing with my good friend/fisherman Jim Duggins out of Loreto SBC. Each time I about got the fish up to the boat, it would make another run. Reeling it back in was a lot of work with a fly reel. Jim said, "Roger, I hope you are able to bring it in this time, I'm ready for a Corona." Elizabeth and I have fished with Jim many times in Loreto.
Roger Brockway
Another dorado, fresh caught on a separate trip, out of the water. What great bright colors!
Roger Brockway
We made our annual trip to Lake Creek Lodge in Camp Sherman in August for fishing, hiking, social gatherings, food and drink. All of our kids and some of Karen's cousins and their kids stay at the resort and her sister lives just down the road, so lots of fun. When we arrived the temperature was 100 degrees, but the cooling started the next day and remained cooler the rest of the week. This made hiking much more pleasant.
I fished a couple of times on the Metolius river. Caught a couple of fish on a dry fly: Comparadun PMD, and a couple of fish on Green Rock Worm. We fished two days at Three Creeks Lake, 17 miles south of Sisters, elevation 6000'. The first day was cool on the lake: 58 degrees and a steady breeze out of the north. I caught eight fish using a callibaetis nymph, no surface action. I had two brook trout and eight rainbows. One of the rainbows was a 20 to 22" broodstock fish that was planted recently, and the darn thing would not fit into my little trout net! The fish broke off when I tried to net it. (Note to self: buy a bigger net...) The next trip to the lake was warmer (65 degrees) with a lighter wind, but the fishing was slower. The surface action picked up in the afternoon when the callibaetis hatch started. A size 16 Parachute Callibaetis was the hot fly.

Barb and I went fishing with Pacific City Fly Fishers. I caught two coho on pink Clousers. The photo below is of me with one of the fish. My version of the fly I caught it with is also shown.
John Sorensen
Note: There is an article is this week's (September 28) News-Guard about Pacific City Fly Fishing and Guide Service.
When I hiked the lower Salmonberry River September 13 to retrieve the temperature monitors I'd placed there May 30, the river was lower than I've ever seen it in the 29 years of the project. While crossing the mainstem was relatively easy without having to worry about heavy current swirling around big boulders, the monitor I'd put in a deep pool in Belfort Creek Falls was almost dry with very little water moving past. The first photo was taken May 30, when crossing was, to say the least, interesting. The second photo was taken September 13: easy to cross, but not enough water in the falls for the monitor.
