As so many events this year, Art Toronto has gone virtual. We are thrilled to present a group of drawings from the Kinngait Studio artists including Shuvinai Ashoona, Ooloosie Saila, and Ningiukulu Teevee, to name a few. We are also featuring fantastic sculptural and mixed-media works by artists who come from across the Canadian Arctic, including Michael Massie (Nunatsiavut), Mark Igloliorte (Nunatsiavut), and Floyd Kuptana (Inuvialuit). In addition to the virtual fair, we are excited to physically re-create our Art Fair booth in the gallery. During the fair, the installation will be viewable during our regular hours.

"The Artist's Mirror: Self Portraits" at the Glenbow Museum, Calgary, 10 March 2018 – 6 January 2019
"A stand-out self-portrait in the exhibition is this sculpture by Inuit artist Floyd Kuptana. It is important to view this self-portrait from a variety of angles. The playful stone sculpture smiles, when viewed from one angle, and sticks out his tongue when viewed from another: The humour in this self-portrait masks a much more serious exploration of self, on a variety of levels. Kuptana created this self-portrait with traditional ideas as well as modern ones. The multiple faces and angles reflect shamanic beliefs about transformation. Yet, the idea of multiple personalities, within one self, is also associated with modern psychology."

From November 29th, 2015 until February 29th, 2016
From November 29th, 2015 until February 29th, 2016 at the Musée océanographique de Monaco, the Cerny Inuit Collection presents the exhibition “Linked: when contemporary art creates awareness about climate change” creating a dialogue on climatic change joining the discussion at the climate conference in Paris. Artworks from the Arctic have joined together with a stone igloo by Mario Merz, a drums installation by Alessandro Sciaraffa and alpine impressions painted by Aloïs Lichtsteiner. The impressive works of these ostensibly disparate artists communicate the shared concern to Nature’s frailty and the human dimension in our environment. The exhibition also includes scientific documentaries related to this discussion.

NEW INFO per 23.10.2024
From: "Floyd Kuptana in 2-D" presentation by Richard D. Mohr, 2017.
"Both of Kuptana's paintings of 2010 were supposed to be shown that December in a pop-up exhibit
that the Gallery Arcturus mounted at a satellite space it ran for several years on Queen Street East called City Gallery. But because the nails in its coffee-table substrate were viewed as a public hazard, the first painting was removed from the show before the opening.
So this halfpainting was Kuptana 2-D' s world premiere.

It is very unusual to see a painting of one of his sculptures, by Floyd himself. I am not aware of any other.
According to the info from Waddington Discovery Art department, it comes from a person who knew Floyd personally, adn regularly bought his paintings. Floyd was then living in an apartment in the Parliament St. area n Toronto. There is no date given, but estimated to be no more than maybe 5 years old.

"INUIT SCULPTURE NOW"
From the review:
One of the most visceral sculptures is a piece by Floyd Kuptana called Starving Bear made of Brazilian soapstone and bone. The wasted and damaged-looking form is a reminder of the increasing global warming reportage and television news images of underweight polar bears struggling to stay afloat amid melting ice floes.

"IN THE SHADOW OF THE MIDNIGHT SUN:
SÁMI AND INUIT ART 2000–2005"
First exhibit: From 14 January - 7 May 2006.
This exhibition presents some 70 works made between 2000 and 2005 by Canadian Inuit artists and Sámi artists from Norway, Sweden, and Finland. While there is no evidence that Sámi and Inuit are related, both indigenous groups inhabit northern lands that are now incorporated into contemporary nations. Their circumstances, since contact with other cultures, share many similarities in terms of religion, language, lifestyle, learning, and politics. The Sámi and Inuit have long histories of making specially crafted objects for functional and religious use; contemporary manifestations show varying degrees of connection with previous times as well as clear indications of change. Created in a wide range of media – sculpture, painting, prints, drawings, textiles, and photography – the works from these two circumpolar cultures are displayed side by side to establish a dialogue of affinities and contrasts. Organized and circulated by the Art Gallery of Hamilton. The AGH gratefully acknowledges the support of the Department of Canadian Heritage (Museums Assistance Program), the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, and the City of Hamilton. Presented at the NGC with the support of the embassies of Finland, Norway, and Sweden.

Since the 1950s, the term "contemporary Inuit sculpture" has been used to separate new work from that produced earlier, that is, during the Prehistoric and Contact periods. Today, however, with a body of work that spans 50 years, the term is something of a misnomer, and needs to be addressed. This exhibition aims to look at what is really contemporary within Inuit sculpture. Using a selection of approximately 25 works, it focuses on sculpture made over the past decade in order to consider some of the current ideas and often very subtle changes that have come to play in the artists' approaches to their subjects and the media in which they work.
Opening reception Thursday September 15 from 6 to 8pm
*Please note: no refreshments at this event
Curator's Tour and Talk given by Christine Lalonde of the National Gallery of Canada at 7:30pm
This exhibition presents 25 sculptures made since the 1990s to look at some of the current ideas and often very subtle changes that have come to play in the artists’ approaches to their subjects and the media in which they work. 'To depict the change from physical to the spiritual is a difficult undertaking for any artist. Yet the inner life force that moves us beyond the corporal is the subject matter of much of Floyd Kuptana's work.'
Born in Cape Perry in 1964, Floyd Kuptana and his family eventually moved to Palatuk. His father, Philip, and mother, Elizabeth, were the center of a tightly knit family group that included uncles, aunts and many cousins. Kuptana studied the work of Francis Ruben and Abraham Anghik Ruben. Later, he did the rough stone work for another cousin David Ruben Piqtoukun, before branching out in 1992 to work for himself and develop a highly personal style.
The community of Paulatuk is starting to establish its own regional style, through the work of Kuptana and a handful of other young carvers. The use of diverse materials, the insetting of bone and steel, the fine detailed finish and sometimes a comic imagination lurking below the surface is what sets this style apart from all others.

Description by ChatGPT (Bing: This sculpture appears to be an abstract representation, possibly of a face with exaggerated features mounted on a triangular base. It is made of two primary components: an abstract stone-carverd piece and a dark, triangular base. The stone piece has a wavy structure, resembling an elongated face with hollow eyes and an extended nose or beak. It is supported by a thin metal rod that connects it to the base, giving the impression that it is floating or in motion. The base has a marbled texture and its dark color contrasts with the lighter tone of the carved piece. The overall design gives off an artistic and modern vibe.
