As stormwater increasingly becomes an issue for our communities - trees help to reduce stormwater runoff, flooding, and pollution. Trees reduce stormwater runoff by catching rainwater in their leaves before it gets to the ground. Their large leafy canopies hold on to some of the rainfall, where it can then evaporate back into the atmosphere. Rainfall that drips to the ground and streets is filtered and absorbed by the soil around trees, while feeding tree roots. Together, all these tree activities remove water pollutants, and reduce stormwater runoff.
In cities, trees also help to reduce the temperature around houses and buildings, remove pollution from the air, and provide a happier, healthier habitat for wildlife and residents. Trees provide many services to us and to wildlife. Promoting tree canopy cover, by planting more trees in your neighborhood, has so many benefits!
Can you name 5 services trees provide to humans and wildlife?
