What I did today:
Benny and I tested the optical setup. He explained to me the components of the setup and how to align the laser. We started testing in order to get the baseline probe measurements with the aim of creating the absorptions curve of our gold nanorod sample. We then planned to use the absorption curve as a guide to finding the point/wavelength at which the gold nanorods will melt/deform.
This all sounds way easier than it was. Aligning the laser alone took around 3 hours, but was super informative as it helped me understand exactly what the laser is going through and how different optical tools are used to generate the beam you want/need. Moreover, there were additional challenges because the laser is degrading and having issues with its consistency and power output.
Notes about working in France:
The lifestyle in general seems more relaxed than in the US. Even research feels more human. For example, people within a research team have close bonds / friendships and eat lunch with each other every day, something that I have not observed in most US research groups.
What I plan to do tomorrow:
We will continue our analysis of our data and start our measurement's using the pump laser (high power femtosecond laser).
