We always have a choice.
The task of navigating ourselves through the world around us to find out who we are is a challenging one. But the good news is that we don't have to do it alone. Aidy and Cara discover this after a night of drinking and dancing turns into an evening of thoughtful discussion and soul-searching; all thanks to one lucky flip of a coin.
Aidy, a young queer college student, invites a group of friends and acquaintances to a night out at the club. After getting kicked out of the club with Cara, one of said-acquaintances, the two find themselves stumbling all over town just talking and enjoying each other's company.
As they start to sober up, Aidy feels compelled to share some deeper, albeit sillier, thoughts, but second guesses herself. So, she decides that they should flip a coin to determine whether or not she should speak her mind.
The coin lands on 'heads,' and so Aidy shares a story from her childhood and links it to a life philosophy. The story intrigues Cara, and so they spend the night exchanging philosophies and growing closer as friends... perhaps something more. But would the same thing have happened if her coin landed on 'tails?'
"Flipp'd" explores the idea of taking chances and seizing opportunities to open up and grow as a person. You never know how a single person and a simple conversation can change your life.
Creator's Statement
Too often do we feel overwhelmed and trapped in the task of being. Life doesn't stop for you, so how do you live every second to it's fullest? Especially when you are young, prone to bad decision-making, and never sure what the hell you are doing?
I made this film when I was in my final year of college. I was one of those kids that teachers and peers had given up on. The fact that I not only got accepted into a university, much less graduated, was a victory. And in order to survive a program with a career path that destroys 90% of the people who enter it, you have to be really strong, and really sure of yourself. For years I had been that unbreakable person. But, life catches up to you, as does it's suffering. And for the first time, I had lost my way.
At that time, I would have sold my body and soul for friendship. For levity. For an experience. I wanted to find myself again, and I didn't know which version of myself I should save; the one I've been and loved being, or the one that I'll need to become down the line. This film was a tribute to that struggle, and every young person facing it.
This is in fact a queer story, and sure it's a bit of a romance. But it's important that, just as in life, the story didn't live for the romance. It didn't exist for the girl to get the girl in the end. Just as in life, both of these characters have a lot of healing to do, and a lot of personal growth to help each other through. In this film, two people find each other and find a kindred soul in one another. They become less alone, and learn how to become a little more like themselves again without having to rely on each other.
There is no immediate or permanent fix, and there is no guaranteed happy ending. There are two sides of every coin, and you miss out on something great every time you leave the 'flipping' to fate. So seize the moment yourself. Make your choices, make your mistakes, and make something great out of the moment you're given. There is something very healing in that. As someone who has some healing left to do, telling a story that millions of young people are going through right alongside me, is an edifying experience.
I hope those who watch Aidy and Cara's story feel seen. I hope they walk away with a relit passion and a fresh craving for life. The ending of Flipp'd is bittersweet, but the message is very freeing. And I hope that you will walk away seeing adventure in the skies and fire in your steps.
