FLiNC is a network of formal linguists in the Nordic countries. We aim to be a forum for cutting-edge research and knowledge transfer and further to stimulate networking and collaboration between formal linguists who are in or connected to the Nordic countries. We hope to be an important resource for scholars, allowing for a fruitful exchange of ideas and information, both virtually and in person.
We invite you to join us if you are a formal linguist, working from any subdomain of theoretical linguistics (phonology, morphology, the lexicon, syntax, semantics), or from the interfaces between any of these domains, or even from other domains (pragmatics, psycholinguistics, language acquisition (L1 or Lx), sociolinguistics, etc.), if your interests are formally oriented. Further, we welcome linguists at any career stage and with a focus on any language(s) or language family.
FLiNC owes its existence to participants at the second Residual Verb Second in Romance workshop (ReVerSe 2) hosted in May 2023 at the University of Agder in a cooperation with the University of Helsinki. Participants at the workshop expressed a desire to work towards something more permanent, a resource for scholars. The Microvariation and microchange in the Scandinavian languages workshop, hosted by in May 2024 by Synergy at the University of Agder, was part of an effort to make that desire a reality and generate a formal network for formal linguists in the Nordic countries. After several discussions among participants of the workshop and other interested scholars, FLiNC was named and established.
Discussants expressed several desires for FLiNC which we are in the process of developing:
a mailing list for easy communication (join here),
an online colloquium for the exchange of ideas (find the schedule here),
and the potential for in person meetings to stimulate knowledge transfer, networking, and collaboration (see here for future workshops).
FLiNC hopes to provide an important resource for scholars, especially those who might feel academically isolated or who might be new to academia or to the Nordic countries. FLiNC aims to bring scholars together both virtually and physically to promote an exchange of ideas and create a feeling of community.
Communication in the network is largely conducted through our mailing list. Please join here to stay updated on events and opportunities.
You may contact Heidi Klockmann if you have any questions about FLiNC.
