FVR stands for free voluntary reading. Students get to choose what they want to read. If the book doesn’t interest them then they don’t have to finish it. Free voluntary reading occurs because you want to, not because of any assignments or grades. FVR is highly beneficial to SLA, but it will not by itself produce higher levels of competence. However, it does help in acquiring higher levels of proficiency. Children studying English in Singapore who followed the “Reading and English Acquisition Program,” outperformed students who were traditionally taught on tests of reading comprehension, vocabulary, oral language, grammar, listening comprehension, and writing. Similar data was collected in South Africa and Sri Lanka. Students who were encouraged to read for fun gained far more knowledge and outperformed students who were traditionally taught on standardized tests and other measures of literacy. There are also studies in which readers mastered the Spanish subjunctive through reading.
