Head Boys Hockey Coach – Forest Lake Area High School

Entering his third season behind the bench at Forest Lake Area High School, Coach Jay Ekman brings more than a decade of experience coaching hockey at multiple levels, including youth, high school, and elite development programs. Known for his passion for player growth both on and off the ice, Ekman has built a program centered around development, teamwork, and community.

In addition to leading the Rangers, Ekman serves as Athletics Coordinator for Forest Lake Area Schools, where he oversees athletic programming designed to promote student-athlete development and lifelong participation in sport. His coaching résumé includes work with USA Hockey, the Upper Midwest High School Elite League, and Minnesota High Performance programs, where he has guided players to national camps, junior drafts, and collegiate opportunities.

Ekman holds a USA Hockey Level 4 Coaching Certification and has served as a USA Hockey Region Coach Developer, mentoring fellow coaches and promoting high-quality, consistent instruction across all levels of play.

As the owner of Ekman Hockey LLC, he provides advanced skill development training focused on technical precision, game awareness, and mental preparation. His approach blends competitive intensity with a positive, growth oriented environment helping players “win the day” by mastering their craft, elevating teammates, and building confidence that extends beyond the rink.

Coach Ekman currently resides in Andover, MN with his wife Natalie and their daughter Madison.
