When Lédger® Live is not connecting to a Ledger Nano S, the problem can be caused by a USB connection, an outdated application, device settings, operating-system permissions, or compatibility limitations. Ledger’s current software is branded Ledger Wallet, formerly known as Ledger Live, so users may see either name depending on the page or version they are using.
The first step is to check the physical connection. Connect the Nano S directly to your computer using a reliable USB data cable and avoid unnecessary USB hubs or adapters. Unlock the device with its PIN and make sure the device screen is active. Ledger's documentation describes connecting the hardware wallet by USB and unlocking it before using the desktop application.
A charging-only cable may provide power without providing the data connection required for communication. Try another known-good data cable and, if possible, another USB port on the computer. Disconnect other USB devices temporarily and reconnect the Nano S directly.
If your computer does not recognize the device at all, the issue may be related to the operating system, USB permissions, drivers, or the device itself. Ledger provides an official support guide specifically for USB connection problems.
Close Lédger® Live completely and reconnect the Nano S. Unlock the hardware wallet and reopen the official application. If the application continues to show a connection error, restarting the computer can also clear temporary USB or application issues.
Make sure you have installed the latest official version available for your operating system. Ledger provides desktop downloads for Windows, macOS, and Linux, along with mobile versions for iOS and Android.
The original Nano S is an older Ledger device, and some newer services and features may not be available on it. Ledger notes, for example, that Ledger Sync is not supported on the Nano S because of its technical limitations. This does not necessarily mean that every connection problem requires a new device; it means that specific features can have different hardware requirements.
If your Nano S connects successfully but a particular cryptocurrency account or feature does not work, check Ledger's current supported-assets and compatibility information rather than assuming that the USB connection itself is faulty.
If the application recommends an update, use only Ledger's official software. Do not download firmware or wallet applications from third-party websites, advertisements, pop-ups, or links received through unsolicited messages.
Before performing any important device operation, make sure your Secret Recovery Phrase is safely stored offline. Never type your recovery phrase into Ledger Live, a website, an email, or a support chat. A person claiming to be Ledger support should never need your complete recovery phrase.
If changing the cable and USB port does not help, check Ledger's official support resources for current connection instructions. You can also review Ledger's service-status page to determine whether a broader service incident is affecting the application.
Avoid repeatedly entering sensitive information or attempting unofficial recovery procedures. If the device displays an unusual error, record the exact message and use Ledger's official support documentation to identify the appropriate solution.

A connection problem does not mean you should enter your recovery phrase online. Keep your recovery phrase private and offline, use authentic Ledger software, and follow only official troubleshooting instructions. With a verified cable, compatible software, unlocked Nano S, and the correct operating-system setup, many common connection problems can be resolved without exposing wallet credentials.
