Psychology Full Course – Volume 08: Personality Disorders

What Is a Personality Disorder?

Everyone has a unique mix of traits that make up their personality. Our personalities affect how we express ourselves, view the world, connect with people, and handle stress.

According to the American Psychiatric Association, a person with a healthy personality can cope with stress, form close friendships, and adjust to different situations. But sometimes, people show patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that are very different from their culture's expectations. These patterns can affect their ability to connect with people and manage their daily lives. That's when we say someone has a personality disorder.

Chapter 1 introduces personality disorders in general — what they are, how they are classified into Clusters A, B, and C, and how they are diagnosed.

Chapters 2–11 explore each of the ten individual disorders in detail: Paranoid, Schizoid, Schizotypal, Antisocial, Borderline, Histrionic, Narcissistic, Avoidant, Dependent, and Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder.

How to Use this Handbook

This handbook is organised as short chapters, each built around the Videos from the corresponding playlist published on the YouTube Channel @FiveMinuteLearnings. To get the most out of it:

Start with the AT A GLANCE box at the beginning of every chapter — it gives you the key idea, the psychologist behind it, the theory category, and a real-world application in a single glance.

Read the chapter itself — this is the original script from the video, lightly edited for readability, so the voice and examples remain exactly as taught.

Review the KEY TAKEAWAYS at the end of each chapter for quick revision — ideal before an exam or interview.

Scan the QR code (or tap the link) in any chapter to watch the full video lesson on YouTube.

If you are preparing for exams such as UPSC or undergraduate psychology assessments, the AT A GLANCE and KEY TAKEAWAYS sections together work well as a rapid revision guide across all chapters.
