2nd grade - 6th grade
Ages 8-12
The connection between your child's hearing of speech and word knowledge is becoming more apparent in their spelling. You'll see more of a mix in how things are spelled using different patterns of common spelling features. Most one-syllable words will be spelled correctly; however, most words with new endings such as -ed or -ing will tend to miss the double letter. In the Syllables and Affixes Stage, children now consider spelling patterns where syllables, affixes (prefixes and suffixes), and base words join. They explore the affixes and base words that affect the meanings for words. This is an important stage because it constructs the foundation for further exploration of word meanings in the next stage, derivational relations.
Characteristics of Syllabes and Affixes Writing
Early Syllables and Affixes
Spells blends, digraphs, and short vowels
use but confuse consonant doubling and e-drop
occasional deletion of reduced syllables
Middle Syllables and Affixes
spells doubling and e-drop with inflectional endings more often
use but confuse unaccented final syllables
common to miss doubled consonant for absorbed prefixes
Late Syllables and Affixes
spells vowel patterns in unacctend syllables
use but confuse some suffixes and prefixes
few things are completely missing
Characteristics of Syllables and Affixes Reading
Vocabulary Development
Reading becomes more content-related in this stage. These words are often multi-syllabic, and at first may be a challenge to pronounce, especially for students in the previous stage and in the beginning of this intermediate stage of reading. For example, students in this stage may struggle to read analysis, analyze, or analytical in which the accented syllable shifts. It is important to remember that this vocabulary is often developmentally ahead of the spelling vocabulary, so it is not appropriate to expect children to master the spelling of these words.
Learning From Context
We want children to grow into independent word learners who acquire many words simply from extensive reading, but this does not happen automatically for most students. An understanding of how to break unfamiliar words into meaningful parts supports vocabulary learning. Students will practice using a dictionary in this stage and reading new vocabulary with strong context clues.

Suggestions for Parents
Help children develop a spelling conscience. Talk with your child about why good spelling matters (to be sure readers can understand what we write; to help us be better readers) and when it matters. Brain-storm with them a list of the kinds of writing that need to be correctly spelled.
Practice developing dictionary skills. Children should understand how to use this skill so they know it is available to them. There are spelling dictionaries that contain lists of commonly used words without definitions that may be easier to use.
Create Semantic Maps. These provide an excellent way to activate childrens' background knowledge on a topic by asking them to brainstorm words related to a topic, which gives you an idea of how much they already know. This helps them recognize words within a general academic context.
Suggestions for English Language Learners
English Language Learners have mastered many of the basic phonics and spellings generalizations by this stage and are ready to study the more advanced features of this stage. However, many of the words used in sorts at this stage may be new vocabulary. Make word study a language-learning event.
spend the time needed to understand silent consonants that will help them make spelling-meaning connections that will be explored in the next stage
utilize bilingual dictionaries that show relations between words in their native language to English
use their commonly misspelled words in conversational speech and define these words in reading material
Online Learning Games/Apps to Improve Literacy Skills
Prefixes Suffixes and Root Word
Suffixes are a letter or group of letters added to the ending of words to change their meaning or function. These useful, shapeshifting tools can be as small as -s, and -ed, or can be larger additions such as -ation, and -ious.
