life and death
In Five Feet Apart the theme of life and death are showed through Stella and Wills struggles with CF. Stella's strict routine and Wills emotional distance from others show how their condition affects their daily lives and their view on life itself. As they get closer, they stand up to there fears and start to realise that life is precious and unpredictable. The death of Poe (also has CF) made them realise how short life can be, making them to cherish every moment they have together. The book explores this theme in a way that makes the reader think about what really matters in life and how we can find meaning in our relationships.
Love
Love is portrayed in Five Feet Apart as it illustrates that it can be both powerful and tough. The book shows that love can form in the most random circumstances, like how Stella and Will have to stay six feet apart to avoid cross infection. This restriction is almost like the barriers love can face, showing the sacrifices involved in there relationship. For example when Stella and Will break the rules and stand five feet apart, it symbolises the risk they are willing to take for love. Despite the challenges, the novel also illustrates how love can bring hope and joy.
Rebellion
The theme of rebellion is explored through the characters in the novel breaking the rules and expectations. Rebellion in Five Feet Apart isn't just about breaking rules for the sake of it. Its about wanting independence and fighting circumstances that limit that personal freedom. An example is when Stella, rebels against the hospital rules by organizing her belonging in a different way and taking control over her treatment regimen. Will on the other hand rebels by refusing to follow the medical guidlines beleiving that some rules are too restrictive. These acts of rebellion highlight the characters CF, showing bravery and determination they face.
