Fitchburg Singers

The Fitchburg Senior Center is proud to be the home and sponsor of a very special mixed vocal group-The Fitchburg Singers. Formerly, The Fitchburg Eldersingers, this group of singing seniors chose to simplify their name to reflect that they are young at heart. The Eldersingers were a part of the Center for several decades, but became virtually inactive as numbers dwindled. Then, in 1998, Sue Sheets, the director of the Center at that time, encouraged revival of the group.

Doris Koster and Carol Nimlos became co-directors in 1999 and the group of maybe 15 , has grown to over 30 singers. Mrs. Nimlos died 4 years ago and Doris Koster now is the leader of this group. Carolyn White joined them in 2000 giving the group a great deal of professionalism.

Primarily, each year, we develop a major themed program which is presented to senior centers and assisted living facilities. This year, the singers continue this tradition with a program named “Seasons In Song”. From “Summertime’ to “Winter Wonder Land” our songs represent each of the seasons in music. Another important gift of the singers is being a part of the annual Veterans’ Day ceremonies at the Fitchburg Senior Center. Also, three years ago we developed a Christmas program which was requested by the cable company and available for scheduling.

The group views their purpose as two-fold. First, they personally gain pleasure from singing together. Additionally, they enjoy sharing their music with others. They want the audiences to enjoy music that will bring happiness to them.

The groups’ theme song counsels : “Don’t worry that its not good enough..Just sing!’ The Fitchburg Singers happily follow that advice.
