CFOS-IFPDS participated in the Coastal Resource Management Planning (CRMP) of the local government of Guimbal, Iloilo on August 7-9, 2024. Present in this participatory workshop were IFPDS Director, Asso. Prof. Caridad N. Jimenez, Ms. Genna D. Serofia (UES), and Mr. Ariel S. Sefil (URA). The 3-day workshop aims to produce a draft CRMP of the Municipality.

TOGETHER FOR BLUE: THE YOUTHS FOR A BETTER MARINE ENVIRONMENT
"One is never too young to make a difference."
The UP Visayas Institute of Fisheries Policy and Development Studies trained 40 selected grade 7-10 students of Palaca-Damilisan National High School as Blue Eco-Warriors during the training-workshop on Sea for Life: Empowering the Youth as Blue Eco-Warriors on June 5-7, 2023.
This program aims to raise the youths’ awareness and understanding about sustainability of the marine/coastal resources and the environment as a whole that in effect will positively affect and change their behavior towards nature. This is also an avenue to engage the youths to participate in programs that will give them the opportunities to grow, use their knowledge, voices and leadership abilities to spread awareness and be change-makers in their community.
Using Behavior Centered Design for Teens, they were able to create solutions to various concerning issues they have identified in their community. The activity was a success with the expertise and help of Mr. Fel Ceasar Cadiz, Director for Capacity Exchange and Learning, Rare Philippines and with the support from the UPV Ugnayan ng Pahinungod/Oblation Corps headed by its Director Farisal U. Bagsit.

The Institute of Fisheries Policy and Development Studies (IFPDS) held a two-day Training-Seminar on Fisheries and Aquatic Resource Management Council (FARMC) for LGU-Miagao on October 12-13, 2023 at DA Miagao Training Center. This activity aims to re-orient the fisherfolk of their roles and responsibilities as officers and members of FARMC as well as reactivate the Miagao Municipal FARMC which has been inactive for a while.
A representative of each Barangay FARMC from 22 coastal barangays in Miagao participated in the said training-seminar. Dr. Liberty Espectato and Asst. Prof. Joshua Regalado, faculty members of IFPDS served as the resource persons. Salient features of FARMC to include the purpose and functions, legal mandates, composition and structure, role in fisheries and coastal resource management as well as the roles and responsibilities of members were presented by Dr. Espectato. To further give the participants additional knowledge on issues and problems confronting the fisheries not only in Miagao but the country and the whole world as well, Asst. Prof. Regalado talked on the “Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing” or IUU Fishing, where he discussed the what’s, how’s, and why’s, knowledge gaps and the current responses to deter and eliminate IUU fishing. A lively and well-participated open forum followed after each presentation.
On second day, the participants elected their new set of MFARMC officers after which they took their oath with Hon. SB Aaron Noble. He also gave the MFARMC members inspirational message to motivate them to find their voice to be heard not only from the municipal level but as one to represent the fisherfolk in the national level. Selected participants also delivered their reflection and take-away messages.
CFOS-IFPDS Faculty and REPS conducted training-workshop on fisheries social science research in Northern Iloilo State University-Estancia Campus on January 23-24, 2025.
This two-day activity aims to equip the participants with basic concepts, tools, and practices in conducting fisheries social science research. Asst. Prof. Liberty N. Espectato, PhD., Ms. Genna D. Serofia (University Extension Specialist), Ms. Ruby P. Napata (University Researcher), and Mr. Ariel S. Sefil (University Research Associate) from the Institute of Fisheries Policy and Development Studies, College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, served as resource persons.
Students and faculty members from the College of Fisheries and Allied Sciences, Northern Iloilo State University (NISU-CFAS) participated this learning event.
