I'm Abby Pinkerton and I am one of the piano teachers at Fairfield Intermediate School. 

I began teaching the piano in 2010, initially in Rotorua and now in Hamilton, including at Fairfield Intermediate since 2018. I have both my ATCL and LTCL diplomas in piano performance, as well as a Master of Music, majoring in music composition. My compositions have been played across NZ, notably by the NZSO, NZTrio, as well as winning a SOUNZ brass composition prize. I enjoy playing the piano for musical theatre shows as well as accompanying other performers. I also play percussion and currently play with Hamilton City Brass Band and am the percussion section leader for Trust Waikato Symphony Orchestra. I enjoy sharing my knowledge of theory, composition, and percussion in my piano lessons! 

I am classically trained and teach piano in a classical style (although I'm more than happy to throw in a pop song here and there). I have put students through both NZMEB and Trinity exams very successfully. I have a strong emphasis on learning how to read music, as I believe this is such an important transferrable skill that students can take with them when learning any other instrument. I think that learning to play the piano gives the student a really strong musical foundation as it is about so much more than just notes: think of listening, rhythm, pulse, coordination, using both sides of the brain, and learning to work with others (just to name a few). Music is a whole language and we are here to explore, immerse, and enjoy the challenge! 

I'm at Fairfield Intermediate for two days a week. Once my lesson slots are filled, students will be passed on to one of our other piano tutors.
