• FAFSA opens on Oct. 1st every year, and you’ll be using tax information from the year before to fill it out initially.
• This application can be lengthy so keep in mind that you can save your progress and resume later. However, note that some aid is on a first come first served basis, so you will want to complete it as soon as possible.
• You need a social security number to complete the application. However, the citizenship status of a parent/guardian is not necessary to receive financial aid (if this applies to your situation, enter 00-00-0000 when asked for their social security number).
First, make an FSA ID (You will need a Social Security number to do this)
If you are a dependent, then your parent or guardian will also need to create one. (A dependent is a student who is NOT “at least 24 years old, married, a graduate or professional student, a veteran, a member of the armed forces, an orphan, a ward of the court, someone with legal dependents other than a spouse, an emancipated minor, or someone who is homeless or at risk of becoming homeless”).
Gather your federal tax information or tax returns as well as your parents’/guardians’ federal tax information or tax returns.
This will be the Federal Tax Return (1040 form) and any W-2s. (You will only have these forms if you have had a job).
When prompted, we recommend you use the IRS data retrieval tool, which allows you to export tax information into FAFSA website directly. This is the easiest option. It will take you to the IRS website and have you log in. If you have issues doing this, no worries. You can input the information required based on your 1040 forms. The application lets you know where the information they are asking for is located on your forms.
Once you have input all of your information and reviewed it to make sure everything is correct, you will be asked to sign and submit. It is easiest to do this online. Your parent/guardian will also be required to do this by logging in with their own FSA ID. If your parent/guardian is unable to sign electronically due to their immigration status, you can print out the form, sign it, and mail it to the address they give you.
After submitting your application, you will be notified of your EFC (estimated family contribution) in a couple of days. They will also let you know if and how much money you are eligible to receive through the Pell Grant.
