The Fine Art Department worked collaboratively to develop a mission statement and philosophy to guide our curriculum work. By having a singular focus, we were able to develop curriculum documents that are authentic, meaningful, and driven by our shared goals and ideals.
Each curriculum document identifies the core skills and content taught within the fine arts disciplines in Lowell Public Schools. Informed by the 2019 Massachusetts Arts Frameworks and its 10 guiding principles, these documents are intended to frame lesson development and guide teaching practice while leaving room for personal interpretation, unique teaching style, and variances in classroom culture and climate.
Fine Arts teachers in all LPS grades and content areas met during formal Professional Development days and during common planning time to develop collaborative, robust, and usable documents to guide instruction and learning. We relied on Grant Wiggins' Understanding By Design and Backwards Design to ensure our curriculum documents were framed around big ideas that teach enduring understandings. As such, students in LPS will leave the fine arts classroom with transferable skills and knowledge that transcend the arts content area, helping them to become creative and critical thinkers in the 21st century.
The Fine Arts Program in Lowell Public Schools provides learning opportunities where innovation & invention, arts skills, critical thinking, and creative problem solving are emphasized. The program strives provide students with the tools required to understand, interpret, analyze, and evaluate the world in which we live. Our program emphasizes the development of creativity and strives to cultivate each student's artistic voice. Central to this creative work is utilizing one’s risk-taking, curiosity, and collaborative abilities. The Fine Arts Program strives to build student confidence and resiliency to foster creativity while supporting 21st century skills. The curriculum focuses on developing creative sensitivities and technical proficiencies; supporting literacy in a variety of mediums and expressions; and providing multiple opportunities to develop lifelong relationships with the arts. The department supports collaborative, interdisciplinary opportunities and encourages students to communicate and advocate through the fine arts, seeing this as an important life skill that extends into and complements all other disciplines.
Our Fine Arts Department is comprised of more than seventy vibrant teachers who strive to support a comprehensive arts curriculum at every grade level. Together, we value building connections across the curriculum, maintaining a robust school arts program, and strengthening our deep connections in the Lowell community.
