Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader is used in 1st-8th grades to help guide readers towards books that they can both read and comprehend independently. Kindergarteners may start the program if their teacher determines that they are ready to read on their own.

Our library has books available from AR level 0.5-11.7. Our collection of higher level AR books is limited though due to content and interest. We do our best to find books that are in the student's level, are engaging, and the student is interested in!

If you want to see what AR level a book may be, or if there is an AR test available for the book, use this link

A few things to consider when looking at AR books:

  • If your child is looking at a book similar to an I Can Read book, the level listed on the cover may not be its actual AR level.

  • AR looks at reading and comprehension. Your child may be able to read the words in a book, but if they are not able to remember or comprehend the story, they are not ready to read the book independently.

  • Non-fiction books are traditionally given higher levels in AR. Non-fiction books are considered more difficult to read, partially because of their topic specific vocabulary.

  • Just because a child has a high AR level, does not mean they are ready to read those books. Additionally, they may have no interest in the story or subject matter itself. We want them to find books that they enjoy reading, but also let them become stronger readers.
