Vector graphics (e.g. .svg, .eps, .ai) uses lines, measurements and math to create an image, while Raster graphics (e.g. .png, .jpg, .gif) use different coloured pixels/dots to create a graphic.
Raster graphics are one of the most popular forms of graphical content.
Raster graphics such as PNG, JPG, and GIF begin to look fuzzy if you enlarge them too much (image on left). However, vector graphic formats SVG, EPS, and AI can be resized without image degradation (image on right). Think about how you will be using your graphics to determine which will be better for your project.
Vector graphics are great for full-screen images, and when designing large-sized prints like posters.
Some things to remember about vectors:
They will stay sharp regardless of how large you make them.
SVG file format will not work in PowerPoint.
EPS, EMF,and WMF files will work in PowerPoint.
