Adding Central Air Conditioning to Your Home
Air conditioning is a must-have in many areas of the country. Air conditioning creates a cool oasis in the summer heat and can severely impact your home's resale values. Air conditioning was once a luxury item that was reserved for the wealthy, but it is now almost universally accepted as a necessary appliance. It is as expected and common as central heating in all households.
Central Air has many advantages
Although many homes still use window air conditioners, central cooling has many benefits. A window unit is limited in its ability to cool one room at a given time. Although it is possible to cool several rooms at once, this can be very inefficient and will require additional fans to move the cool air between the rooms. The central air conditioner can cool all rooms in the house, and maintain a consistent temperature. A whole-house air conditioning system requires only one compressor motor, one fan, and a lot less energy than running multiple window conditioners at once. A central air conditioner also provides quiet cooling for the whole house. The compressor is usually placed outside of the house in an unutilized corner of the yard. This allows it to quietly hum away throughout the day without being noticed by anyone indoors. This creates a more pleasant indoor environment than the noisy window units. The power draw from multiple window air conditioners can overload older homes' electrical systems. An electrical circuit can only handle one air conditioner at a time before it blows a fuse or trips a breaker. Many older homes had only two to three circuits to power the whole house. Modern building codes require that every five to six outlets be wired separately. However, if your AC is on, you can run a sweeper to send you to the basement to reset the breaker.
Central Air's Disadvantages
There are few situations in which central air can be problematic, aside from the initial cost. Central air cannot be run in houses with boiler heat because they do not have the required ductwork. Homes with electric baseboard heating also need to be modified in order for them to have the quiet comfort of an air conditioner throughout their homes. Although it is possible to install cold air pipes in a small number of rooms, this is an additional expense. There are many multi-room outdoor air conditioners that can be installed in your home. They have delivery tubes and can deliver cold air to as many as three rooms.
