The Haadsa: A Glimpse
I was crying in pain as someone held my hand and whispered that I was okay and she could hear the ambulance siren and soon I'll be taken care of. I never found that person who consoled me moments after my near fatal head-on car accident on that fateful morning of May 26th, 1992 in Surrey on Fraser Highway. Today I would like to sincerely thank her for this gesture. The timing of the accident could not have been worse as my new bride whom I had married just 11 months earlier in India, was going to arrive in a couple of weeks. Sabina was my childhood sweetheart whom I had seen on stage at a ISGREE82 (All India Ismaili Scouts-Guides Camporee) in Bombay and instantly fell in love. It took me 3 years from that day to make her my girlfriend. We were only a year into our relationship when our family migrated to the US in 1986 and we were separated for 5 long years. We kept in touch during that period and I managed to move from New York to Vancouver and returned to Mumbai to marry her on June 30th, 1991.
Doctors had prepared my parents for the worst in the ER as they might have to amputate my left leg and I may not walk for at least a year. Luckily they were able to save it by inserting a plate and several screws in my leg and hip. I had also suffered severe dental injuries including lacerations on my face. Since I was out of danger, we kept my accident news a secret until Sabina’s arrival so that she was able to travel without worrying. She was very brave and accepted the challenge of taking care of a crippled man who needed a lot of support. She took care of me, and my parents supported us during this ordeal and 4 years of rehab. I was determined to get back on my feet and enjoy my new life with my beautiful and courageous wife. I quickly progressed from wheelchair to crutches and then to a cane. I had a limp in the beginning but was dancing in 6 months. I decided to go back to school so that I didn't have to install blinds for living. I certified myself as an Electronics Technician due to my interest in the field and then further schooling made me an IT professional. I don’t think I would have returned to school if it wasn’t for the accident and the time I had during my rehab. This is a personal tragedy turned into blessings. So friends, never be sad or give up as only He knows what is best for you.
