Costuming can be very important in:
Differentiating between characters/ character groups
Establishing initial interpretation of characters
Showing character development or change over the course of a film.
Showing time and place
In this clip from Grease, think:
How does the director differentiate between characters using costume and make-up?
What do we assume about each character based upon how they are dressed?
How does costume begin to develop character?
The two images below show Ricky at the beginning of Hunt for the Wilderpeople, and Ricky at the end of Hunt for the Wilderpeople.
What do we notice about the costuming?
How does this show us his character development of the course of the film?
How similar is his costume to Hec's (his caregiver and friend) at the end of the film?
What does this similarity show us about his relationship with Hec?
Props can be used to:
Convey the time and place that the film is set
Help develop character/ identify a type of character
Create a sense of atmosphere
From seeing the props used in this image, we can see that this is a violent, dystopian visual text.
From looking at the props these characters are holding, we can already gather some things about the character and what they will be doing in the film. A staff, a sword, a bow and arrow all point to violence and fantasy.
The props in this room give us a feeling of coziness. From the hot-water-bottle, to the books, the the collection of nic nacs - this is a home!
