All functions at a glance
To start with, it is good to know who you actually have.
All functions can actually be divided into different groups.
It is therefore a reasonable list if you literally include everyone.
For starters, at the top of the list is the producer with the executive producer directly below it.
Then it splits into two other categories.
So you have the director and the production manager.
Let's start with the production manager branch. Below the production manager you have the recording manager. Below that you have the production assistant and last of this branch you have the runner. So everyone within this branch of a film set has their function and tasks, but everything ultimately comes back to the production manager, who then communicates it to the executive producer. More about the tasks later. Everyone therefore has a 'final responsibility' so that all communication runs smoothly and it does not become chaotic.
Then we go back to the director.
Under the director are again four different branches. You have the assistant director,
the sound director, the director of photography and the art director.
All those functions also have branches. So to begin with, you have the assistant director, below that you have one more thing and that is the cast. So actually all actors and extras fall under the director's assistant.
Then you only have a tree operator under the sound director.
Then at the director of photography you have two branches again,
so you have the Gaffer and the Camera operator.
Below the Graffer you have the Best boy,
below that the electrician
and below that again the light assistant.
Under the camera operator you have three more functions.
However, these are all separate from each other.
You have the Camera assistant,
the clapper loader
and the Grip.
Finally, you have the Art director who also comes after the director.
This function also has a number of branches.
First you have the set builder, with the set dresser below.
Another branch of the Art Director is Hair/Makeup.
Finally, you have one more branch under the art director, namely the clothing. T
his is basically all the features on a large set.
This also does not mean that all these people are always there.
On a smaller set, or a short film, it is less important that all tasks are performed so carefully.
Producer
The producer is the person at the top of the food chain on a movie set. Is actually taking the initiative of the film. This person came up with the idea and hires writers and directors to get the idea on paper or make the idea into a movie. The producer ensures that the film is financially possible by applying for a subsidy or funding.
Executive producer
An executive producer is therefore one step below the producer. This function is actually almost the same. Only as the word says, more executive and active. Usually this person puts together the crew of the next functions to come. This person also keeps an eye on the 'wallet'. What about the income and expenses.
Director
This person is actually ultimately responsible for the final product. He/she must ensure that everyone is in their place and that the decor is good. It is actually the manager of the whole product.
First assistant director
In the Netherlands this is often also the recording leader, but not always. This person takes care of shooting planning and is actually an extension of the executive producer. The executive producer therefore passes on many tasks and other things to the first assistant director. important that they can work well together! You also have a second assistant director, this person is often the director's personal assistant. Often this person also gives advice about the content to the director.
Script and Continuity (Script Girl or Boy)
This is actually an extra person for the script.
This function is important for order, to ensure that everyone is actually in their place and that everyone actually knows what they are doing.
Unfortunately, this function also involves the administration of the pieces that were shot in advance.
So when something is important for the final edit, it's up to this person to pass it on properly.
production
From an idea to a film, that is actually the production in one sentence. It's about the preparations, but also that everything goes smoothly during the shooting. In any case, the production is literally the making of the film, documentary or series. Very important is structure, order and someone has to take the lead. For that you have the Production Manager, with the recording manager, production assistant, runner and location manager below that.
Production leader
This person rules all major production issues. He also keeps an overview of production and is also ultimately responsible in this sector.
Recording leader
Coordinates the film crew according to the shooting schedule. This person provides structure in the field of recordings.
Production assistant
This function is directly under the production manager and rules than the smaller production issues. For small ambiguities you can therefore go to this person, before everyone immediately bothers the production manager with it. Good cooperation between the production manager and the production assistant is therefore useful.
Runner
Actually, the name says enough, this person ensures that the actors and products arrive at the right place at the right time. This person will certainly have to deal with difficult people or large products that have to be moved.
This function is also important on set.
Location manager
It actually says it all, this function is all about the location.
It must be ensured that all locations are available.
Also consider weather conditions if you want to film outside.
Art department
The art department on a film set is also something that cannot be missed. Sometimes it may sound less important than the rest, or people often overlook it. But these features are also much needed in creating a successful film. This way you can also subdivide the art department into actual art, the set and all props.
Production Designer
To begin with, this is actually a kind of the main function of the art department and also bears final responsibility. This function is about filling in the image What will the movie look like in the end. Think of things like color scheme and style, but also locations, decors, filling in the decors, hair, make-up and so on. This function is close to the director, and therefore communicates all these decisions with the director.
art director
Now we come to the piece of art. Art can often be seen on a film set or at least in the decor. Think of the design of a living room or other rooms. Art quickly creates atmosphere. This position is actually the department head of the coastal section and works closely with the production designer.
Assistant art director
Each department with ultimate responsibility also has an assistant, including the art director. Always handy for when a lot needs to be done or checked.
Set designer and set decorator
All these people are about the set. The set designer designs the set, kind of an architect but for a film set. The set decorator is in charge of filling in the set. So where will everything be placed and how do we set everything up perfectly. Working together is very important for these two. The tasks that belong to the functions are close to each other, so it is very important that they can actually agree with each other.
Prop master
Last of the art part and building the set, you have the prop master. This function is in charge of the props, smaller items for the movie. For example, think of a fake knife or a lamp that needs to be smashed. For all that kind of stuff you have to go to the propmaster.
Hair and makeup
Hair and make-up also have an important function on a film set. After all, all extras and actors must be dressed in the theme of the film. You can't shoot a movie from the Middle Ages where the extras in the background have a nice modern hairdo. It is therefore important that both a make-up artist and a hairdresser are present on set.
Closet
The same goes for the clothes. You don't want to have all different styles, it has to be coherent. That is why there is always a stylist, but also a costume designer present on the set. The stylist provides the right clothing, and that every extra and actor actually wears the right clothing. The costume designer makes everything from ball gowns to simple jackets and blouses. Everything must look tip-top.
Camera
This is one of the most famous feature within the movie industry. Without a cameraman you don't have a film, it is simply said, but what does this mean and how many people work on the film part of a film. What are they actually doing?
DOP / director of photography
You could actually say that there is a person who is ultimately responsible for everything, for every small task there is a person who is ultimately responsible. Likewise here. The Director of Photography also called a D.O.P is actually the technical director. This feature is in charge of camera and light.
Camera Operator
This person is actually the typical cameraman as some call it. The camera operator operates the camera and looks through the viewfinder while turning. This function is therefore certainly not to be missed and has a major role in the end product.
First assistant camera operator and focus puller

Om te beginnen is het goed om te weten wie je nou eigenlijk allemaal hebt. Alle functies zijn eigenlijk onder te verdelen in verschillende groepen. Het is dan ook een redelijke lijst als je letterlijk iedereen mee rekent. Om te beginnen staat bovenaan de lijst de producent met daar direct onder de uitvoerend producent. Vervolgens splitst het zich in twee andere categorieën. Zo heb je de regisseur en de productieleider.
Laten we beginnen met de tak van de productieleider. Onder de productieleider heb je de opnameleider. Daaronder heb je de productie assistent en als laatste van deze tak heb je de runner. Iedereen binnen deze tak van een filmset heeft dus zijn functie en taken, maar alles komt uiteindelijk weer terug bij de productieleider, die het vervolgens communiceert naar de uitvoerend producent. Over de taken komt later meer. Iedereen heeft dus een ‘eindverantwoordelijke’ zodat alle communicatie soepel verloopt en het geen chaos wordt.
Dan gaan we terug naar de regisseur. Onder de regisseur zitten weer vier verschillende vertakkingen. Zo heb je de regieassistent, de sound director, de director of photography en de art director. Al die functies hebben ook weer vertakkingen. Om te beginnen heb je dus de regieassistent daaronder heb je nog één ding en dat is de cast. Dus eigenlijk alle acteurs en figuranten vallen onder de regieassistent.
Dan heb je onder de sound director alleen nog een boom operator. Vervolgens bij de director of photography heb je weer twee vertakkingen zo heb je de Gaffer, en de Camera operator. Onder de Graffer heb je dan weer de Best boy, daaronder de electrician en daaronder weer de lichtassistent. Onder de camera operator heb je nog drie functies. Wel staan deze weer allemaal los van elkaar. Zo heb je de Camera-assistent, de clapper loader en de Grip.
Als laatste heb je dan nog de Artdirector die dus ook na de regisseur komt. Ook deze functie heeft weer een aantal vertakkingen. Als eerste heb je de decorbouwer, met daaronder de set dresser. Een andere vertakking van de Artdirector is Haar/make-up. Als laatste heb je nog één vertakking onder de artdirector, namelijk de kleding. Dit zijn eigenlijk alle functies op een grote set. Dit betekend tevens niet dat al deze mensen er altijd bij zijn. Op een kleinere set, of een korte film is het namelijk minder van belang dat alle taken zo zorgvuldig worden uitgevoerd.
<< Film Producent / Producer >
De producent dus de persoon bovenaan de voedselketen op een filmset. Is eigenlijk de initiatief nemen van de film. Deze persoon is met het idee gekomen en huurt schrijvers en regisseurs in om het idee op papier te krijgen of het idee te verfilmen. De producent zorgt dat de film financieel mogelijk is, door middel van een subsidie aan te vragen of fondsen.
Uitvoerend producent / Executive producer
Een uitvoerend producent staat dus één stapje onder de producent. Deze functie is eigenlijk dan ook bijna hetzelfde. Alleen zoals het woord al zegt, meer uitvoerend en actief. Meestal stelt deze persoon de crew samen, van de volgende functies die nog komen. Ook houd deze persoon de ‘portemonnee’ in de gaten. Hoe staat het ervoor met de inkomsten en uitgaven.
Regisseur / Director > wiki/Film_director < /Televisieregisseur
Deze persoon is eigenlijk eindverantwoordelijke voor het uiteindelijke product. Hij/zij moet ervoor zorgen dat iedereen op ze plek staat en ook het decor goed is. Het is eigenlijk de manager van het hele product.
Eerste regieassistent >>/ First assistant director
In Nederland is dit vaak ook de opnameleider, niet altijd. Deze persoon zorgt voor draai planning en is eigenlijk een verlengstuk van de uitvoerend producent. De uitvoerend producent geeft dan ook veel taken en anderen dingen door naar de eerste regieassistent. belangrijk dat ze goed kunnen samenwerken! Ook heb je nog een tweede regieassistent deze persoon is vaak de persoonlijke assistent van de regisseur. Vaak geeft deze persoon ook advies over de inhoud aan de regisseur.
Script en continuïteit (scriptgirl / scriptboy) / Script and continuity / Script supervisor
Dit is eigenlijk een extra iemand voor het script. Deze functie is belangrijk voor de orde, om ervoor te zorgen dat daadwerkelijk iedereen op z’n plek komt te staan en dat iedereen ook daadwerkelijk weet waar ze mee bezig zijn. Helaas komt bij deze functie ook de administratie naar voren van de van te voren gedraaide stukken. Dus wanneer er iets belangrijk is voor de eind edit, is het aan deze persoon om dat goed door te geven.
Productie / Filmcrew : filmploeg / Production >> Production office
Van een idee naar een film, dat is eigenlijk de productie in één zin. Het gaat hier om de voorbereidingen, maar ook dat alles soepel verloopt tijdens het maken van de opnames. Hoe dan ook de productie is letterlijk de maak van de film, documentaire of serie. Erg van belang is dan ook structuur, orde en iemand moet de leiding erin nemen. Daarvoor heb je de Productieleider, met daaronder de opnameleider, productie assistent, runner en locatiemanager.
Productieleider / Production leader
Deze persoon regels alle grote productionele vraagstukken. Hij houd daar naast het overzicht van de productie en is ook eindverantwoordelijke in deze sector.
Opnameleider / Recording leader
Coördineert de filmploeg aan de hand van het opnameschema. Deze persoon zorgt voor structuur op het gebied van opnames.
Productieassistent / Production assistant PA
Deze functie staat direct onder de productieleider en regels dan de kleinere productionele vraagstukken. Voor kleine onduidelijkheden kan je dus naar deze persoon gaan, voordat iedereen de productieleider er meteen mee lastig valt. Een goede samenwerkingen tussen de productieleider en de productie assistent is dus wel handig.
Runner / 'running' around and undertaking all sorts of tasks / Production assistant
Eigenlijk zegt de naam al genoeg, deze persoon zorgt ervoor dat de acteurs en producten op de juiste plek op het juiste moment komen. Deze persoon krijgt dus zeker wel te maken met lastige mensen of grote producten die verplaatst moeten worden. Ook deze functie is van belang op set.
What does a Runner (TV or Film) do? Runners provide vital administrative assistance within a film, TV or video production company, 'running' around and undertaking all sorts of tasks to make sure everything runs smoothly. Runners are also known as production assistants.
Locatiemanager : Locatiescout / Locationscout >> Location manager >> /filmlocations
Het wordt zegt het eigenlijk al, deze functie draait om de locatie. Er moet ervoor gezorgt worden dat alle locaties beschikbaar zijn. Denk hierbij ook aan weersomstandigheden als je buiten wilt filmen.
Art department >> /Filmcrew#Art_Department
Het art department op een filmset is ook iets wat niet kan ontbreken. Som klinkt het misschien minder belangrijk dan de rest, of mensen zien het vaak over het hoofd. Maar ook deze functies zijn hard nodig bij het creëren van een succesvolle film. Zo kan je het art department ook weer onderverdelen in daadwerkelijk kunst, de set en alle rekwisieten.
Production Designer /Production_designer
Om te beginnen is dit eigenlijk een soort van de hoofdfunctie van het art department en daarbij ook eindverantwoordelijke. Deze functie gaat over het invullen van het beeld Hoe ziet de film er uiteindelijk uit. Denk aan dingen als kleurstelling en stijl, maar ook locaties, decors, invulling van de decors, haar, make-up en ga zo maar even door. Deze functie staat dichtbij de regisseur, en communiceert al deze beslissingen dan ook met de regisseur.
Nu zijn we bij het stukje kunst gekomen. Op een filmset of tenminste in het decor is vaak ook kunst te zien. Denk aan de inrichting van een huiskamer of anderen kamers. Kunst zorgt toch al snel voor sfeer. Deze functie is eigenlijk de afdelingshoofd van het kustgedeelte en werkt nauw samen met de production designer.
Iedere afdelings eindverantwoordelijke heeft ook weer een assistent, zo ook de art director. Altijd handig voor als er veel gedaan of nagekeken moet worden.
Set designer en set decorator >> / Setdresser
Al deze mensen gaan over de set. De set designer ontwerpt de set, soort architect maar dan voor een filmset. De set decorator heeft de leiding over de invulling van de set. Dus waar komt alles te staan en hoe zetten we alles perfect neer. Samen werken is voor deze twee heel belangrijk. De taken die bij de functies horen liggen dichtbij elkaar, het is dan ook van groot belang dat ze het daadwerkelijk eens met elkaar kunnen worden.
Propmaster < wiki/Set_decorator
Als laatste van het kunst gedeelte en het bouwen van de set, heb je de prop master. Deze functie heeft de leiding over de rekwisieten, over kleinere voorwerpen voor de film. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan een nep mes of een lamp die kapot gegooit moet worden. Voor al dat soort dingen moet je bij de propmaster zijn.
Haar en make-up / Hair and makeup
Ook haar en make-up hebben een belangrijke functie bij een filmset. Alle figuranten en acteurs moeten tenslotte gekleed zijn in het thema van de film. Je kan niet een film uit de middeleeuwe opnemen, waar de figuranten op de achtergrond een mooie moderne opscheer hebben. Het is dus van belang dat er zowel een make-up artist als een hairdresser aanwezig is op set.
Wardrobe < wiki/Wardrobe_stylist
Hetzelfde geldt eigenlijk voor de kleding. Je wilt niet allemaal verschillende stijlen hebben, het moet wel een samenhang hebben. Daarom is er altijd een stylist, maar ook een costume designer aanwezig op de set. De stylist zorgt voor de juiste kleding, en dat iedere figurant en acteur ook daadwerkelijk de juiste kleding aan heeft. De costume designer maakt alles, van baljurken naar simpele jasjes en blouses. Alles moet er tip top uit zien.
Camera / Camera Crew < /wiki/Film_crew > /Cameraman_(disambiguation)
Dit is één van de meest bekende functie binnen de filmindustrie. Zonder cameraman heb je geen film, is simpel gezegd, maar wat houd dit nou in en hoeveel mensen werken aan het film gedeelte van een film. Waar zijn ze nou daadwerkelijk mee bezig?
DOP / Director of photography / Cinematographer
Je kan eigenlijk wel zeggen dat overal een eindverantwoordelijke voor is, voor ieder klein taakje is er een eindverantwoordelijke. Zo ook hier. De director of Photography ook wel een D.O.P genoemd is eigenlijk de technische regisseur. Deze functie heeft de leiding over camera en licht.
Camera Operator < /wiki/Camera_operator >< wiki/Movie_camera
Deze persoon is eigenlijk de typische cameraman hoe sommigen het noemen. De camera operator bedient de camera en kijkt tijdens het draaien door de zoeker. Deze functie is dus zeker niet te missen en heeft een grote rol in het eindproduct.
(1st AC) Eerste assistent camera operator en Focus puller
Deze twee hebben allebei een functie onder de camera operator. Zo zorgt de eerste assistent voor de beweging van de camera, buiten het draaien. Bijvoorbeeld het opbouwen van de camera of alle andere apparatuur dat nodig is. De focus puller is verantwoordelijk voor de lenzen en de scherpte. Meestal zijn deze twee personen hetzelfde, omdat ze allebei op hetzelfde neer komen. Namelijk de camera buiten het draaien in de gaten houden en verzorgen.
Clapper loader > /wiki/Clapperboard
De typische ‘action’ en ‘cut’ persoon. Dit is de persoon met het bordje in zijn hand. De persoon die aangeeft wanneer ze beginnen en wanneer het klaar is. Ook zorgt deze functie voor het klaarmaken van het filmmateriaal zodat het naar de editors kan worden gestuurd.
Grip en steadicam operator </wiki/Steadicam < /wiki/Dolly_grip >
International Cinematographers Guild
Dit zijn eigenlijk twee functie die niet altijd nodig zijn. Het ligt hierbij aan de manier waarop je wilt filmen. De grip functie regelt dingen als een rijsshot. Er wordt dan ervoor gezorgt dat de camera op een dolly en rails komt. Dus wanneer een camera op een lastige plek terecht moet komen, komt deze persoon goed van pas. De steadicam operator doet eigenlijk een beetje hetzelfde alleen dan voor een steadicam. Dit wordt vaak als een apart opnameproces ingelast.

Sound design < /Geluidstechnicus
Eigenlijk spreekt deze voor zichzelf. Je hebt de Sound director en de Boom operator. De sound director heeft de leiding over het geluid afdeling, zoals bij iedere afdeling moet er weer iemand de eindverantwoordelijke zijn. De sound director bedient dan ook het mengpaneel en kiest welke microfoons er gebruikt worden. De Boom operator voert dit allemaal uit en bedient de microfoontjes.
Licht / Lighting technician /wiki/Lighting_technician

Bij de lichtafdeling heb je een aantal dingen die belangrijk zijn, een slecht belichte film is namelijk bijna niet meer goed te krijgen.
Gaffer < /wiki/Gaffer_(occupation)
Een Gaffer is eigenlijk een onmisbare functie op de set, ook wel de Chief Lighting Technician genoemd. Letterlijk de chief over het licht. Deze persoon geeft leiding over het licht en is daarmee ook de eindverantwoordelijke in deze afdeling.
Best boy en lichtassistent Lighting Designer
Eigenlijk zijn deze functies beide assistenten. De best boy is de assistent van de Gaffer en de lichtassistent is een extra hulp voor iedereen van de lichtafdeling. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan grote lampen die verplaatst moeten worden of anderen dingen die geregeld moeten worden.
Electrician > /The_Electrician < /Lighting_technician
De verantwoordelijke over de kabels en verantwoordelijk voor het niet door laten slaan van de stoppen. Er is vaak veel licht nodig op set, en niet alle stoppen kunnen zoveel aan. Vandaar dat het van belang is dat het in de gaten wordt gehouden hoe en wat. We willen natuurlijk geen brand op set.
Afwerking Editor. < Montage_(film) > /Editor_(beroep) < /Film_editing
Niet alleen het schieten van de video is belangrijk, ook de nabewerking erna. Ook dit is nog steeds een deel van het filmproces. Zo is het belangrijk dat ook hier structuur in zit. Ondertussen loopt het project van de film al een tijdje, het is dus goed dat het idee waarmee iedereen begon hier nog steeds duidelijk is.
Ook hier heb je nog een kleine onderverdeling in, namelijk afwerking van de beelden, het geluid en de muziek die er eventueel onder moet. De afwerking van de beelden wordt eigenlijk altijd gedaan door de Editor.
Deze persoon monteert de film, en zorgt dat alle juiste beelden worden gebruikt. Alles wordt nu één geheel.
Bij het afwerking van het geluid heb je nog drie verschillende functies. Als eerste de eindverantwoordelijke en de leidinggevende, de Sound Designer. Daarna heb je de Sound Editor, deze persoon monteert het geluid en voegt eventueel soundeffects toe. Als laatste heb je dan nog de Re-recording mixer, deze persoon mixt de geluiden en zou eventueel zelf nog wat kunnen produceren. Alles voor een unieke film.

Muziek en geluid licht dichtbij elkaar, toch is het in de filmindustrie iets anders.
Film muziek is iets wat extra spanning toevoegt, iets wat meer diepte geeft aan je verhaal. Het is dus zeker niet iets wat je kan missen of wat niet op orde kan zijn. Het is van belang dat ook dit alle aandacht krijgt wat het vergt.
Om te beginnen heb je de Music Supervisor, deze persoon heeft de leiding en is daarmee ook weer te eindverantwoordelijke. Daaronder komt de Componist. Eigenlijk is dit een losstaand iemand. Deze persoon hoort niet perse bij de filmcrew, maar is wel van belang. De muziek voor de film worden door hem of haar gemaakt. Een los staand persoon, maar zeker niet misbaar.
Je kan dus zeker wel zeggen dat het een drukke boel is op een filmset, maar welke taak je ook hebt. Hoe groot of hoe klein het ook is, het is allemaal van belang. Zo zie je maar dat een lichtassistent die misschien alleen een lamp verplaatst net zoveel toevoegt als een Sound Editor die de afwerking van het geluid verzorgt. Iedereen helpt elkaar en iedereen heeft hetzelfde doel voor ogen. Een drukke boel, maar toch een goede samenwerking!
