De eerste stap in een samenwerking is een LOI (Letter of Intent)

een formele samenwerkingsgarantie waarmee de producent vertrouwen opwekt bij geldschieters.  

Om de film in de bioscoop uit te brengen, zoekt de producent meestal een geschikte distributeur. Deze koopt de uitbrengrechten van de film in een bepaalde regio en draagt daarmee vaak bij aan de financiering en totstandkoming van de film. 

In overleg met de producent maakt de distributeur een releaseplan.
