6 (O)While the man was standing beside me, (P)I heard one speaking to me out of the temple, 7 and he said to me, (Q)Son of man, this is (R)the place of my throne and (S)the place of the soles of my feet, (T)where I will dwell in the midst of the people of Israel forever. And the house of Israel shall no more (U)defile my holy name, neither they, nor their kings, by their whoring and by the dead bodies[b] of their kings at their high places,[c] 8 by setting their threshold by my threshold and their doorposts beside my doorposts, with (V)only a wall between me and them. They have (W)defiled my holy name by their abominations that they have committed, so I have consumed them in my anger. 9 Now let them put away their whoring and the dead bodies of their kings far from me, (X)and I will dwell in their midst forever.

10 As for you, (Y)son of man, (Z)describe to the house of Israel the temple, that they may be ashamed of their iniquities; and they shall measure the plan. 11 And if they are ashamed of all that they have done, (AA)make known to them the design of the temple, its arrangement, (AB)its exits and its entrances, that is, its whole design; and make known to them as well all its statutes and its whole design and all its laws, and write it down (AC)in their sight, so that they may observe all its laws and all its statutes and carry them out. 12 This is the law of the temple: the whole territory on the top of (AD)the mountain (AE)all around shall be most holy. Behold, this is the law of the temple.

There are numerous passages in the Bible about glory filling the temple. I would say it is one of the primary uses of the word. We see it filling the temple in the Old Testament, we see it filling us as the temple in the New Testament, and we know that the glory of the Lord will fill the new heavens and earth in the age to come.

Come, o come and fill thistemple,

and fill this temple with the glory of the Lord

come, o come and fill this temple,

and fill this temple with the glory of the Lord

come, o come and fill this temple,

and fill this temple with the glory of the Lord

come, o come and fill this temple,

and fill this temple with the glory of the Lord

come, o come and fill this temple,

and fill this temple with the glory of the Lord!

Inspired by Chris Machen's text, this majestic anthem is a modern hymn to God's power and glory. Robert Sterling's melody is filled with confident gestures and uplifted by lush harmonies. The tempo broadens for the final stanza, which provides a final climactic statement of "Christ the King." Great for general worship, All Saints' Day, Christ the King, and festal occasions.

And now for a Kingdom Public Service Announcement: The gates of hell have not prevailed against the Church. They never will (Matt. 16:17-19)! Awakened people beget awakened people. Your work and mine is to stay present to the love, presence, and will of the Father as we pass on the truly good life to those in our sphere of influence. There is no higher call. The Spirit fills the Church, his Temple, to this end.

You were made for glory, beloved. God has given you His glory through your faith in His Son. Now He wants to position you in your place in His house, connected to and supporting other believers on every side. When He finishes building, His glory will once again fill His earthly temple.

As I wake up to a new day, I am grateful for the opportunity to seek You. I pray that You fill me with Your presence so that I might radiate Your love and grace throughout the day. Just like in 1 Kings where Your glory filled the temple, I pray that my heart will be Your dwelling place.

You promised in Matthew 5:6 that those who hunger and thirst for righteousness will be filled. And this morning, I come before You hungry and thirsty for more of You. My soul longs for Your touch, and I believe that as I seek You, I will find You.

As awe-filled as this event must have been, there is still another event that is far greater than even this. Two-thousand years ago on a hill called Calvary, the very Son of God descended from heaven, dwelt among man, died on the cross as a perfect sacrifice, and rose again on the third day in proclamation of final victory over sin. In so doing, God exchanged the grandeur of a building for the splendor of dwelling within man. With this act, a new Temple was established.

He is the divine radium and when we spend time with Him we are transfused with His element and we then are filled with Him as He permeates us with Himself that He would be glorified in the church as the temple of God! Amen!

The last few chapters of Exodus detail the construction and setup of the Tabernacle. This tent served as a portable temple, representing the presence of God among the Israelites during their time in the wilderness and their early years in Canaan. Exodus 40:34-35 records that when the Tabernacle was dedicated at Mt. Sinai, the glory of the Lord filled the Tabernacle, and Moses could not enter it.

Many years later, Solomon commissioned the building of a permanent temple in Jerusalem. And, just like the Tabernacle, the glory of the Lord filled this temple at its dedication. And the priests could not enter the temple because of that glory (2 Chr. 7:1-3).

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.

Although a Godly man pride crept up on him. He became so great and received such honor that it really puffed him up to the point that he felt he could take the role of a priest and went inside the temple in a room that not even the priest themselves were allowed. He then attempted to perform the sacred duty of the High Priest to offer incense. The record of this act is found in II Chronicles 26. As a result he was struck with leprosy and forced to live in separation, as was the fate of a leper, and had to share the rule of the kingdom with his 20 year old son Jotham.

So, what does this have to do with the Lord sitting on a throne and his train filling the temple? Does God sit upon a throne? Well, even a king gets tired of standing. I am sure with all the work God has to do He needs to sit down for a while and rest. I have to hand it to him that even while resting His weary body he still perform kingly duties. Did and does He actually wear a robe with a train that filled the entire temple and where does a throne fit in the temple? This really does not add up unless we consider it to be a metaphor.

If Isaiah had this vision of God sitting upon a throne in the temple with his train filling the temple right after King Uzziah died in 742 BC, then this vision may make more sense. 20 years later King Shalmanesser V or Assyria conquered the Northern Kingdom of Israel in 722 BC. The fall of the Northern Kingdom would be the first time the Hebrew people suffered under a foreign ruler since their Egyptian slavery which spans almost 900 years. Nobody could believe that the nation of God with the Holy Temple would fall under foreign rule. So God gave Isaiah, the prophet, a vision which would speak to him with a metaphor that would be easily understood in his day. However, to us almost 3,000 years later it would be difficult to understand. This is where I can put my expensive education and my PhD in Archaeology to some good.

Christians can learn from this. We cannot put our trust in a man or woman to protect our nation. Our trust must be in God alone. Even King David, one of the greatest and most Godly kings to ever live brought disgrace upon his nation with adultery and murder. God could not even allow him to build His temple because he had so much blood on his hands.

1st Kings 8:1 through 10 Then Solomon assembled the elders of Israel, and all the heads of the tribes, the chief of the fathers of the children of Israel, unto king Solomon in Jerusalem, that they might bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of the city of David, which is Zion. And all the men of Israel assembled themselves unto king Solomon at the feast in the month Ethanim, which is the seventh month. And all the elders of Israel came, and the priests took up the ark. And they brought up the ark of the LORD, and the tabernacle of the congregation, and all the holy vessels that were in the tabernacle, even those did the priests and the Levites bring up. And king Solomon, and all the congregation of Israel, that were assembled unto him, were with him before the ark, sacrificing sheep and oxen, that could not be told nor numbered for multitude. And the priests brought in the ark of the covenant of the LORD unto his place, into the oracle of the house, to the most holy place, even under the wings of the cherubims. For the cherubims spread forth their two wings over the place of the ark, and the cherubims covered the ark and the staves thereof above. And they drew out the staves, that the ends of the staves were seen out in the holy place before the oracle, and they were not seen without: and there they are unto this day. There was nothing in the ark save the two tables of stone, which Moses put there at Horeb, when the LORD made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt. And it came to pass, when the priests were come out of the holy place, that the cloud filled the house of the LORD,

I disagree with those who say God did indwell the second temple and cite as evidence the temple veil rending in two, claiming that indicates God's departure from the second temple. The counter to this argument or reasoning goes back to Ezekiel 9 & 10, where there is no mention of, or association with the temple veil renting when God clearly departed the temple then.

Consider God's words to Haggai the prophet (2:7) "Then I will fill this house with glory" says YHWH of the heavenly armies. The context is God admonishing the people for settling in their own houses but leaving His house in ruins. But when God commands them to rebuild His house he promises to fill it with glory. Perhaps this is a figurative future promise but it sure seems attached to the literal building of Zerubbabel's temple. 17dc91bb1f
