The Art Gallery of Ontario has an amazing exhibit that is relevant to Filipinx in diaspora. The exhibit asks these key questions:
By looking at the Spanish empire, how can we better understand the world we live in today? How does this help us imagine more expansive and decolonizing futures?
Can we look at an exhibition of works from a colonial empire without glorifying it?
The curators are of Portuguese and Philippine heritage. The talk is very illuminating and can be a resource for exploring so many issues related to media (what is art? Politics of museum and art curation), history (trade routes, empire, politics), and religion (reflection on human dignity, personhood, relationship to Faith), and of course, art!
https://ago.ca/events/faith-and-fortune-curators-talk
1 hour talk with the curators sharing their perspective and highlighting some pieces from the exhibit
Hope you enjoy it and have a chance to check it out over the summer/plan for a 2022-23 excursion/feature!
