If you want deep, controlled bass with a customizable sound signature for immersive home entertainment, choose FiiO FH5s; if you need professional-grade studio monitoring with superior comfort for long sessions, choose Liquid Audio Audio-Technica ATH-M50X.
• FiiO FH5s: Offers incredible sonic detail and bass control via a hybrid driver setup but requires an external source to drive effectively due to its 40-ohm impedance.
• Liquid Audio Audio-Technica ATH-M50X: Delivers robust, accurate audio with exceptional build quality and a comfortable over-ear fit, though it lacks active noise cancellation features.
• The Verdict: Pick the FH5s if you prioritize audiophile-grade tuning for music and movies in a quiet space; pick the M50X bundle if you need durability, portability, and a complete cable kit for professional or casual use.
The FiiO FH5s is engineered for the listener who treats their audio experience as a personal theater. This isn't just about hearing notes; it is about feeling the depth of a scene or the texture of an instrument. The core of this experience lies in its all-new acoustic design, which pairs a 12mm beryllium-plated diaphragm dynamic driver with a PU gasket. This specific combination allows for deep, potent bass that remains tightly controlled rather than muddy or overwhelming. When you are watching TV, especially action-heavy scenes or dramas with rich soundtracks, this driver ensures the low-end hits hard without bleeding into the dialogue, keeping the audio landscape clear and immersive.
For those who demand precision, the FH5s offers a level of customization that few other devices match. With three distinct sound adjustment switches, you can toggle between eight different frequency responses. You aren't stuck with a single factory tune; you can dial in the lows, mids, or highs based on what you are listening to. If you prefer lush vocals for a podcast or exquisite treble for classical music, the built-in Knowles TWFK-30017 balanced armature driver handles the high frequencies with minimal distortion. The semi-open design at the rear cavity further enhances this by relieving air pressure, making long listening sessions significantly more comfortable than traditional sealed in-ear monitors.

However, this level of performance comes with specific requirements. The FH5s has an impedance of 40 ohms, meaning it is not designed to be driven directly by a smartphone jack without a dedicated amplifier or DAC. If your goal is simple plug-and-play convenience from a phone without extra gear, these might feel underwhelming until properly powered. Additionally, the twist-lock swappable plug system allows you to switch between 2.5mm, 3.5mm, and 4.4mm heads, offering versatility, but it also means you must manage your cables carefully. This product is best suited for the enthusiast who wants to fine-tune their audio environment for TV watching or critical music listening and is willing to invest in the right source equipment to unlock its full potential.
The Liquid Audio Audio-Technica ATH-M50X bundle is built for the user who values reliability, comfort, and a comprehensive toolkit out of the box. As a circumaural over-ear headphone, it contours around the ears rather than sitting inside them, providing a secure and customized fit that many find more comfortable for extended periods. Whether you are mixing tracks, gaming, or simply enjoying a movie marathon, the adjustable headband and professional-grade earpads ensure that the headphones stay put without causing fatigue. The closed-back design provides passive noise isolation, which is crucial for blocking out ambient distractions when you need to focus on the dialogue or the score of a film.
Durability is a central pillar of the M50X design. Constructed with high-quality materials including leather, metal, and plastic, these headphones are engineered to withstand the rigors of daily use. The foldable design makes them easy to transport, while the swiveling ear cups offer one-ear monitoring capabilities—a feature often sought after by DJs and audio professionals. What truly sets this bundle apart is the inclusion of multiple detachable cables. You get a 1.2m straight cable, a 3.0m straight cable, and a 1.2m to 3.0m coiled cable, along with a screw-on 1/4" adapter and a 10-foot extension cable. This variety means you can adapt to any setup, from a compact desk arrangement to a long-distance connection to a home theater receiver, without needing to hunt for accessories.
While the 45mm large-aperture drivers deliver accurate, clear sound across an extended frequency range, the focus here is on faithful reproduction rather than extreme customization. The frequency range spans from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz, covering the entire spectrum of human hearing with clarity suitable for both mixing and casual enjoyment. The package includes a carrying pouch and a polishing cloth, ensuring your investment stays protected. This product is ideal for someone who wants a "set it and forget it" solution that works immediately with various devices, prioritizing ease of use, robust construction, and a complete accessory kit over the granular sound tweaking found in the FH5s.
• Best for Bass Depth and Control: FiiO FH5s uses a specialized beryllium-plated dynamic driver to deliver deep, potent bass that is tighter and more refined than standard dynamic drivers.
• Best for Comfort During Long Sessions: Liquid Audio Audio-Technica ATH-M50X offers an over-ear circumaural design that distributes weight evenly, reducing ear fatigue during hours of TV watching.
• Best for Sound Customization: FiiO FH5s provides eight unique sound signatures via physical switches, allowing you to tailor the audio profile to your specific preference or content type.
• Best for Portability and Setup Flexibility: Liquid Audio Audio-Technica ATH-M50X includes a massive array of cables (including a 10ft extension) and a 1/4" adapter, making it ready for any audio source without extra purchases.
• Best for Isolation: Liquid Audio Audio-Technica ATH-M50X utilizes a closed-back design for effective passive noise isolation, ideal for noisy environments.
• Best for Audiophile Detail: FiiO FH5s employs a hybrid setup with a separate balanced armature driver for treble, offering a larger soundstage and more intricate detail retrieval.
• Best for Build Durability: Both are robust, but the ATH-M50X features a reinforced structure specifically marketed for professional use and frequent folding.
• Best for Wireless Versatility (via Source): Neither is wireless, but the FH5s supports 4.4mm connectivity for higher fidelity wired connections, while the M50X excels with standard 3.5mm and XLR-ready adapters.
After weighing the specifications and intended use cases, I would buy the FiiO FH5s for my own home entertainment setup. While the Liquid Audio Audio-Technica ATH-M50X is an incredible piece of hardware with unmatched cable flexibility, the FiiO FH5s offers a more engaging experience specifically for TV watching. The ability to tune the sound with the switches allows me to optimize the audio for dialogue clarity and cinematic bass, creating a deeper immersion that the fixed response of the M50X cannot match. In my opinion, the hybrid driver technology in the FH5s delivers a richer, more nuanced soundscape that transforms how I consume media, provided I pair it with a decent amplifier to handle its 40-ohm impedance.
Neither the FiiO FH5s nor the Liquid Audio Audio-Technica ATH-M50X features active noise cancellation (ANC). The FH5s relies on a semi-open design for natural sound, while the M50X uses passive noise isolation through its closed-back ear cups to block out ambient noise.
Value depends on your needs; the Liquid Audio Audio-Technica ATH-M50X bundle offers immediate value with its extensive cable kit and included accessories, whereas the FiiO FH5s offers superior sound customization for those willing to invest in a compatible source device.
No, neither model utilizes bone conduction technology; both rely on traditional dynamic drivers. They are wired headphones only, connecting via 3.5mm jacks, so they do not offer Bluetooth or RF wireless capabilities natively.
