He also has hockey pedigree in his family as he is the nephew of former NHL player Tomas Sandström, who was a part of the 1997 Stanley Cup winning Detroit Red Wings side.
Having previously played in Sweden's second and third tier, the 30-year-old Finn made his EIHL debut last season, icing with the Coventry Blaze. In 49 league and playoff appearances, Kivilahti scored 37 points (20 goals, 17 assists).
Commenting on his move to Fife, Kivi said: "I talked with the coach and got a good feeling about Fife’s next season and roster. I know a few players already and I know what they can bring to the team. I'm looking forward to bringing my effort and skills to help the team to climb up in the standings and return as a playoff team!
"I hope I can entertain the crowd in the upcoming season and hope to see the rows packed in the arena in home games!"
The 27 year old makes the move to the EIHL having played last season with Sportivi Ghiaccio Cortina alongside Flyers fan favourite Carlo Finucci. During this time, he scored 34 points in 34 league games (8 goals, 26 assists).
Jeff Hutchins commented: "Mikael is a big body, who plays hard, is good in the faceoff dot and responsible in the defensive zone.
He has produced numbers in various leagues and comes highly recommended by Flyers legend Carlo Finucci.
We are excited for Mikael to join us."
Fife Flyers have added firepower to their forward line with the signing of sniper Janne Laakkonen for the 2022/23 Elite Ice Hockey League season.
The 40-year-old Finn has played in the EIHL on two separate occasions, in 2019/20 and 2021/22. Both times he iced for the Coventry Blaze and put up impressive numbers, with more than one-point per game throughout both seasons.
His latest season in the Elite League saw him ranked as the 17th top points scorer in the league.
Laakkonen brings a wealth of experience, having spent 15 years in his home nation, Finland. He’s also iced in Sweden, Russia, Austria and several other European countries.

The UNISON Fife Health Branch Fife Flyers have announced the capture of Canadian left-winger Matt Carter for the 2021/22 Elite Ice Hockey League season.
Fife Flyers have confirmed the capture of championship winning, Latvian international D-man Imants Lescovs.
Imants has a good hockey IQ. Good hands, skilled and strong on the offensive blue line. He likes to transistion quickly which will benefit our speedy forwards.
Fife Flyers have confirmed the signing of Canadian Forward Greg Chase for the 2021/22 Elite Ice Hockey League season.
Commenting on Greg, Fife Flyers head coach Todd Dutiaume said:
“Greg’s resume speaks for itself, he instantly improves our line-up with proven offensive punch. He is excited to be joining the club and doing whatever it takes each night to make this team successful.
He is familiar with a number of former Flyers’ players who helped get this signing over the line. I could not be more thrilled to be adding a player of Greg’s calibre to our line-up.
This latest signing complements our young, talented, hungry bunch quite nicely and we feel our forward line-up is shaping up nicely."
Fife Flyers have confirmed that young Scots Andy Little and Scott Jamieson will ice for the club in the 2021/22 Elite Ice Hockey League season.
Announcing via the club’s newly formed official supporters club, the announcement means the Flyers have signed four British players to the club for the new season, with Jamieson and Little joining Bari McKenzie and Craig Peacock.
Goalie Andy Little joined the Flyers in 2017/18, where he has been between the pipes four times for the club.
20-year-old Scott Jamieson grew up in Kirkcaldy and will mark his second season as part of the Fife Flyers squad, having made the move up from SNL side the Kirkcaldy Kestrels for the 2019/20 season.
Jamieson has moved his way up the youth system in Fife, having iced for the Fife Flames and the Falcons. He has also made 5 appearances for the Great Britain U18 side.
Commenting on Andy Little, Fife Flyers head coach Todd Dutiaume said:
“Andy is a fantastic person and a great teammate – he is liked by everyone and is a hardworking guy who is keen to get better all the time.
“He has made progress from being the third goalie on the team to holding that backup slot, the position was always going to be his.
“I have had a few talks with Andy and there was concerns about him starting his own business and moving forward in life over the pandemic that we may lose him but he is keen and excited to get back on the ice and we are thrilled to have Andy back with us this year and backing up Shane Owen.”
On Scott Jamieson, Dutiaume added:
“Scott joined us in the last proper season and has and been cutting his teeth slowly over that time. The pandemic got in the way of his development a little bit, but we will continue pressing forward with that.
“He has a good skating ability, he is getting stronger, he worked hard with our strength and conditioning coach last season and him and I have had conversations about what it is going to take to be successful and get to have playing time in this league.
“We have worked hard in training with him on his positional play too, but at this point in his development it is important that he gets real time minutes and gets an opportunity to show folk what he is capable of and the type of player that he wants to be.
“That comes with added responsibility of being able to handle the pace of Elite League level but you don’t get that without getting minutes and that is something we will certainly be shooting for and has been part of the discussions we have had with Scott.”
Head coach Todd Dutiame: "Isak will be a pleasant surprise for people who are just looking at Elite Prospects. He’ll be an excellent addition to the powerplay, he has a very good shot & a high skill level. He'll be a guy who can put up some numbers for us "
"He comes highly recommended and certainly from our Swedish connections, he will be a great presence in our dressing room and hopefully be working his way to becoming a fan favourite very early. "
Fife Flyers have confirmed that Swedish D-man Jonas Emmerdahl will return to the club for the 2021/22 season, marking his second year with the club.
Emmerdahl joined Fife in 2019/20, icing 49 times for the club before the season was curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The pandemic has not stopped Emmerdahl pulling on his skates though. He spent the year at Swedish third-tier side Ostersunds, making 25 appearances and scoring 8 points along the way.
Before joining the Flyers, the 29-year-old from Stockholm played in the second-tier of ice hockey in his home country, icing for VIK Vasteras and IF Bjorkloven.
Commenting, Fife Flyers head coach Todd Dutiaume said:
“I am very excited to have Jonas Emmerdahl joining us again for another season, I have been instantly impressed with his professionalism on and off the ice.
“Last season he became a key anchor at the backend of our powerplay when seasons finally got clicking near the end of the year.
“We will make some improvements at the backend of the team and that will only show off his strengths more.
“I will be looking for him to be more of a leader this year in the changing room and be a little more vocal now that he is comfortable, and he knows what it takes to win in this league."
Fife Flyers have signed new American forward Michael McNicholas for the 2021/22 Elite Ice Hockey League season.
McNicholas makes the trip across the Atlantic for the first time and will leave his current club, the Tulsa Oilers who play in the ECHL.
The 27-year-old from Reno, Nevada has racked up an impressive score card in the ECHL. In his first full season in 2018/19 he played in the league with the Maine Mariners and played 65 times and scored 53 points.
His second season with Maine Mariners was also fruitful with 60 appearances and 38 points. In season 2020/21 he played with three clubs: Utah Grizzlies, Indy Fuel and Tulsa Oilers – scoring 25 points in 51 appearances.
Before joining the ECHL McNicholas learned his trade with the University of New Hampshire’s NCAA side.
Commenting, Fife Flyers head coach Todd Dutiaume said:
“Michael is going to provide a solid offensive punch for the squad. I spoke to him this week and he is thrilled to be part of the club and excited to get here.
“It is important that, moving on from previous seasons, we have had guys that are reliable offensively and Michael will fall into this category and be relied on heavily in all offensive situations.”
Fife Flyers have signed Swedish defenceman Erik Naslund for the 2021/22 season.
The right-handed D-man joins Fife after picking playing for a decade in the Swedish HockeyEttan league – the third tier of hockey in Sweden.
In his ten years in the league he has played for Ostersunds IK, Morrums GoIS, Tyringe SoSS, Nybro Vikings, and Vallentuna.
During that time he has played 339 times and scored 140 points from the blue line.
Commenting on the news, Fife Flyers head coach Todd Dutiaume said:
“As a general rule of thumb Swedish guys who we have worked with and talked to over the years you can rely on them to have a good manner, attention to detail and I like what they are capable of.
“Erik’s name came through as a good reference from Jonas Emmerdahl. He is a right-handed D-man, something we have been lacking a little bit in the past. He has a very similar style to what Emmer brought to the table.
“He has great offensive capability and will play at both ends of the ice and something that we really need at the back end as a steadying influence and I Erik is going to be a fantastic D-man for this club.”

Fife Flyers have announced the signing of British forward Craig Peacock for the 2021/22 Elite Ice Hockey League season.
Peacock joins the Flyers with a raft of experience having started his Elite League career in 2008/09 on loan at Basingstoke Bison from the Peterborough Phantoms. He then made the move to the Elite League permanent in 2009/10 when he signed for the Belfast Giants.
The 32-year-old from Peterborough was part of the 2013/14 league-winning Belfast Giants side, where he racked up 18 goals and 10 assists in the regular season.
He then joined Fife’s fierce rivals the Glasgow Clan in 2016/17 and recently competed in the EIHL mini series with the Manchester Storm.
Peacock has also represented Great Britain at the World Championships, making 39 appearances.
Commenting on signing for Fife Flyers, Craig Peacock said:
“I am so excited to be joining the Fife Flyers, I cannot wait for September to pull on that Flyers jersey for the first time. Hopefully we will see everyone safely back at the Auld Barn making that famous noise that I have seen so many times before as an opposition player, but I cannot wait to experience it as a Flyers player this time. Having played on the opposite side of the fierce rivalry with the Glasgow Clan I know how passionate the fans are in Kirkcaldy, I cannot wait to see everyone when the season gets underway.”
Welcoming Peacock to the club, head coach Todd Dutiaume said:
“Peaks is a strong and ambitious signing for our squad. Getting to know him as a person over the summer has only reaffirmed that he will be a strong presence for us on and off the ice. He provides another layer of offence and is effective in both ends of the ice. Our fans will be excited to see him play and as we make hockey a safe environment for everyone, he will light up a packed Fife Ice Arena.”
Fife Flyers Scottish forward Bari McKenzie has signed for the club for a third season in Kirkcaldy. Since joining Fife in the 2018/19 season the forward from Dumfries has posted 15 regular season points.
The 34-year-old is well-loved by Fife Flyers fans having played for Edinburgh Capitals, Dundee Stars and the Glasgow Clan in his career. McKenzie did sign for the club for the 2020/21 season but was unable to take to the ice due to the pandemic. Commenting, Bari McKenzie said:
“I am delighted to be returning for my 3rd season in Kirkcaldy. I genuinely feel at home in Fife now, I have loved my time here and I strongly believe next season is going to be special. Special not just getting back playing at the auld barn but having a bounce back season after the disappointment of not playing in the 2020/21 season. I am really looking forward to seeing all the fans backing us next season and give all the new and returning players a massive Flyers welcome. I know how passionate our fan base is and it will be exciting to see you all again.”
Also commenting, Fife Flyers head coach Todd Dutiaume said:
“It is with great pleasure that I welcome back Bari to the club for the much-anticipated 2021/22 season, in his short time at the club he has become a fan favourite and I am sure he will be welcomed back by our supporters. What you see is what you get with Bari, he leaves absolutely everything on the ice and gives his all on every shift. Bari is the start of our signings for 2021/22 and I hope the fans are excited as I am to see who we have coming in.”
FIFE FLYERS WILL COMPETE IN SEASON 2021/22
Fife Flyers are delighted to announce that the team will be competing in the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) season in 2021/22.
The team will play at the Fife Ice Arena for another season of enthralling hockey in Kirkcaldy after 16 months out of action due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Currently, the club is working on revamping its media output, securing sponsorships and most importantly signing players for the season.
Commenting on the news Fife Flyers director Tom Muir said:
“After what has felt like an eternity I am beyond excited to finally have hockey back in Kirkcaldy and put a team on the ice for another season in the EIHL.
“We have missed our fans so much and Saturday nights do not feel the same without Auld Barn being packed every night and the roof being lifted off – the first night that happens will be something special.
“It has been an incredibly tough year and half for everyone, but as we are turning the corner and all things going well with the Scottish Government’s roadmap back to normality we should be able to fill Fife Ice Arena come the first game of the season.
“Behind the scenes we have been working hard to bring Flyers fans what they have been wanting, so we have been revamping our media output, working on bringing in sponsorships and, the news everyone wants to hear about, signing players to come to Kirkcaldy and get results on the ice.
“I would like to thank our amazing fans who have stuck by us throughout this difficult period, your endless support has been a great motivation throughout this period.
“Keep your eyes peeled soon for news on season tickets, kit, sponsors and a whole lot more as we build back towards another historic season in Fife.”
