Students can apply to colleges through various modes. Below are a list of the different college application options with the differences and similarities between them.
College Website Application
College Website Application
Students can apply for admissions to a university, college, or technical school directly on the website.
- A simple way to apply to one school.
- Most colleges you apply directly online.
- Applications can be found under the admissions section of the website.
- Most colleges don’t require essays or letters of recommendation.
- Once you apply online you will need to request your transcript through SCOIR.
- Request official ACT scores.
- Check to see what college credit transfers if you completed dual enrollment.
- Is a single, online application that students can submit to any participating school, rather than having to fill out a new application for every school individually
- While you cannot apply to every single accredited institution by using this single online application, you can apply to a large number of undergraduate programs.
- An extensive college application that allows students to apply up to 20 different colleges
- Help high school students stay organized by keeping track of all their application materials and deadlines in one place
- Some colleges may need additional information for their application

The Common Application, which is also more informally referred to as the Common App, is an advanced college application that is used to help prospective college students apply to multiple institutions at once.
The Coalition Application is a college application platform that is currently accepted by over 140 schools. While the application itself does not differ significantly from the better-known Common Application, the Coalition Application offers several extra pre-application features and tools.

- FREE to use except the student must pay additional application fees for each school the student applies to
- Made up into 4 parts
- The Locker gives you private, unlimited digital space in which you can collect and organize important materials, such as documents, photos, and videos, as a record of your high school experience. Items you store in your secure, cloud-based Locker can easily be submitted as part of your application to Coalition schools.
- The Collaboration Space is a virtual area in which you can connect with trusted adults, like counselors, teachers, and family members, and ask for their input on your college preparations. Here, you and your supporters can collaborate on things like college lists, essays, or applications.
- The Coalition Application can be used to apply to all 140-plus Coalition member schools, easily and efficiently.
- MyCoalition Counselor is a directory of informative articles, printable, and other valuable resources for college preparation. Here, you can find free, expert advice on such topics as financial aid, standardized tests, and college essays—great reads for students heading for college and their supporters alike.

- Start early and give yourself time to answer all essay questions thoughtfully.

- Address all parts of an essay prompt if it is asking a multi-part question.

Letters or Recommendation
Some college applications may require students to have letters of recommendations from teachers and their school counselor. It is important to note that letters of recommendation can take time to write. Remember to ask at least 2 weeks before the letter is due. A resume or brag sheet is a great resource to provide the individual, so they can write the best letter!
