What a productive and exciting few months it has been for our seventh graders!
To wrap up December, students completed their projects for the NJAGC Competition. This year's theme was The Art and Science of Gifted Education, and the results were really impressive. One group built a Rube Goldberg machine, another created a podcast-style video, and a third produced a documentary featuring interviews with students across grade levels about their experiences in GATE. It was wonderful to see how each team brought such a different and creative approach to the same theme.
In January, students explored logic puzzles designed to strengthen analytical thinking, deductive reasoning, and convergent thinking skills. It has been a great way to keep those critical thinking muscles sharp in a fun and engaging way.
Students have also been stepping into a leadership role during Study Skills, working alongside sixth-grade students to facilitate activities like rebus puzzles and stories with holes. It has been a really meaningful experience for everyone involved.
On February 27, students enjoyed our 6th and 7th Grade Convocation, which was a highlight of the season. They heard from entrepreneur Ali Taylor, took part in an epidemiology lab with the Liberty Science Center, and worked through a hands-on design challenge with Carol Lang. It was an inspiring and energizing day from start to finish.
Now students are diving into an exciting new project where they will design learning experiences for second-grade students. They can choose to create a board game, card game, or virtual field trip. Once the projects are complete, second graders will have the chance to test them out firsthand. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to combine creativity, planning, and problem-solving while thinking carefully about how to design something truly engaging for a younger audience.
