I never said THANK YOU
Sylvie – May 2018
Once under a crushed car
Lying down on the oh-so cold road
In a dark February night
With eyesight upside down.
I just wanted to stay there. Just wanted to sleep in the numbing frost.
And that strong voice saying « open your eyes » so loud above me.
« Come on, open your eyes ». My eyelids wouldn’t obey. Too heavy.
Then all turned black.
I woke again when a swift whistle seemed to surround me.
A feel-good hssss, light and warm, as the pneumatic stretcher was being blown.
And again I tried…eyelids... too heavy.
And no I can’t feel my arms.
How many in the car? What car?
No I can’t feel anything.
Yes my parents’ phone number / no I don’t know my name….
No I’m not diabetic / why do you ask?
And no I don’t know where I live now / but yes I remember my birthplace….
Then all turned white
6 hours full coma. 6 days amnesia.
6 months for total rehab.
6 years to regain confidence in driving.
Never went back to this countryside.
Never knew who the rescuers were,
Firefighters and Gendarmes who woke up at 2:00 a.m. for me.
I am thinking of you now and I thank you for your efficient and kind help.
Thank you for your generous, tireless commitment, you routine heroes.
