Our Manifesto
Faced with a scenario in which not only the concept of feminism, but also its social representation, is still linked to the idealizations proposed by white and liberal feminism, where are Black women? Often excluded or represented in a stereotypical way, Black women always occupy the place of resistance, of a critical look from an essentialist view of a racist and patriarchal society, suffering daily the impacts of living in a society structured by this violence. In Brazil, there are more than 41 million Black women, which represents 23.4% of the total Brazilian population, but why have we rarely seen a film directed by a Black Brazilian woman? Social stratification remains in the Brazilian film industry, starting with the extensive financial investment it takes to become a film director and also with the constant social silencing of Black women's worldviews.
We came to promote a space for transformation! What do Black women have to say that is so feared by society? We want to make it possible to disseminate the diversity of Black women's points of view about Brazil, about representations of being a woman, about society. We want to promote spaces for listening and inclusion of discourses promoted by Black Brazilian women based on the art of cinema. We want to promote breaking stereotypes, promoting attention to the plurality of representations and not continuing to follow universal representations. We want to understand Brazil and Brazilians through the eyes of women who resist living in this country, despite suffering structural violence. We want to make it possible for the art of Black Brazilian women to be disseminated, because it is a power for revolution.
