On this page families can learn more about the LAP reading program as well as find helpful links to grade level reading resources that support their child's reading.
What is LAP?
Students at our school benefit from additional academic support through the Learning Assistance Program (LAP). The LAP program is designed to provide supplemental support to students who are identified as in need of additional assistance to meet Washington State reading standards. At Fife Elementary School, The LAP program is focused on supporting students Kindergarten through Fifth grade. LAP support is always a second dose of instruction in addition to what occurs in your child’s classroom.

What we teach: Really Great Reading Curriculum
At FES, our LAP program implements a Science of Reading-based curriculum, which provides systematic instruction to ignite students’ orthographic mapping, which supports a strong foundation for literacy skills. Please click on Really Great Reading for more information about our adopted intervention curriculum.
Students enrolled in LAP at FES have access to the Reading Playground, an interactive website where students can practice and reinforce skills that have been introduced during reading groups.
Please click here for RGR.FUN for access to the games. *Students will need their passcode to sign into their account. Please contact one of our Reading Interventionist for your learner's login information.
Families and caregivers can also click on Home Connections for examples and information on skills we teach in small groups.
How we Assess and Progress Monitor: i-Ready Diagnostic Screener
At FES, classroom teachers administer the i-ready diagnostic screener in Reading. Students that fall into our admissions criteria will also be assessed with a secondary screener. Secondary screeners vary by grade level.
Components of the Progress report – Why we assess these area of reading:
Phoneme Segmentation Fluency (1st grade) - According to the National Early Literacy Panel (2020), the two most important phonemic awareness skills are segmenting and blending. This is because these two skills have a causal effect on learning how to read and spell. Blending causes children to read words. Segmenting causes children to spell words. Segmenting is being able to hear a word and break it apart into its individual sounds. The ability to perform the skills of blending and segmenting require that a student is able to detect individual phonemes in words.
Pseudo Word Reading Fluency (1st and 2nd grade) - We use pseudowords, also known as nonsense words, as a tool to assess students’ phonetic decoding ability. Pseudowords are letter sequences that follow regular phonetic rules and are pronounceable, but have no meaning. As such, students have not seen these words before and are sure to have not memorized them as sight words.
Oral Reading Fluency (2nd-5th grades) – To read fluently means to read accurately, expressively, and in a way that leads to understanding of the text. Children who read fluently read in a smooth, not choppy, way. They pay attention to punctuation and make their voice sound like real talking, not like a robot when they read. Research shows that students must be able to read text with greater than 95% accuracy in order to fully comprehend the text.
OSPI REQUIREMENTS & RAN ASSESSMENT INFORMATION
We are required by state law to screen students in grades K-2 for indications of below-grade level literacy development, including indications of / areas of weakness associated with dyslexia. We use the i-ready RAN assessment (Rapid Automatic Naming) for grades K-2.
Please click OSPI requirements, for more information and resources for dyslexia and RAN testing.
Family Partnerships
