At the university level, I have taught courses on film, literary theory, cultural studies, English as a Foreign Language, intercultural pragmatics, and Spanish as a Foreign Language. In line with my research methodology, one of the fundamental aspects of my teaching philosophy is to prepare students to understand the specific workings of the artistic expressions we study in class, whether literature or any other type of media. The idea is to equip students with the necessary tools to critically understand the ways in which our media-saturated environment communicates different worldviews. I would like them to also be aware of the numerous educational possibilities that art has to offer when it comes to refining our knowledge of language and the different cultures that are built around it.

“I loved having Fernando as my professor! He made class interesting and fun for all of his students. He engaged us all in conversations and required us to talk to one another, which helped create a fun learning environment and allowed me to meet my classmates. I wish I could have him again next semester and I really enjoyed his class! #givefernandoaraise” - Student in Spanish I at The Ohio State University, Fall 2021.
“Fernando had earned every single score I gave him today. He’s the best teacher I’ve had at Ohio State. If I could take all of my Spanish with him I would. He’s very good at what he does.” - Student in Spanish I at The Ohio State University, Spring 2022.
“Fernando is so passionate and so good at offering interesting discussion questions that develop both students’ knowledge of the topic and students’ language skills. His presentations were always organized and easy to understand while pushing students to think freely and deeply. I’m taking his class next semester just because I enjoyed his instruction so much this semester.” - Student in Introduction to the Study of Literature and Culture in Spanish at The Ohio State University, Fall 2022.
“One of the best professors I have ever had. Sometimes it can be hard to speak up in Spanish classes because you are afraid people will not understand you or think you sound dumb, but the professor did such a good job of creating a comfortable environment that I shared a lot in this class. He made the content fun and engaging and even if we had an interpretation of a film that was different from his he encouraged us to share. I loved coming to this class and I am very sad that it is over. Fernando Sanchez Lopez is an incredible professor and anyone who gets to take one of his classes is extremely lucky.” - Student in Spanish Film at The Ohio State University, Spring 2024.
“This was probably the best introduction course I’ve taken. It was organized extremely well so that every unit built off the last. It seemed to me that the basic film language was introduced just enough for the students that had never taken a film class before to feel comfortable analyzing with it. A good amount of Latin American history was taught and that made the course much easier to get into because there were so many connections that could be made with the information provided to us. Basic theoretical framework was also provided in amounts that weren’t overwhelming. Fernando did a great job creating and instructing this course, as well as making the students feel comfortable participating in discussion by trying to relate to us and ask us what we’ve been watching. He taught this class assuming that no one knew how to analyze film and that he was teaching everyone how to do that and why we should, which is not something I’ve felt many other instructors have prioritized.” - Student in Introduction to Latin American Film at The Ohio State University, Fall 2024.
“I so greatly appreciate and feel thankful for the instructor's passion and enthusiasm for the subject matter, which fostered an enriching and enlivening learning environment. I went into the course believing that I did not like movies and I expected to have a hard time developing interest in the course. However, my relationship with film/filmography, especially Spanish film, has completely transformed throughout the semester as I've begun to develop an appreciation for how art, industry, and the historical context intersect to produce film. I'm extremely grateful for the experience I've gained which has profoundly altered how I approach and consume audiovisual stimuli moving forward.” - Student in Spanish Film at The Ohio State University, Spring 2025.
“A teacher who is polite and close to his students when teaching classes, he seeks to connect with us and I like that because it makes me feel appreciated, I also liked his way of explaining and it is clear that he has a vocation for teaching.” - Student in English Language I at University of Alicante, Fall 2025.
“Ha sido un profesor muy implicado, cercano y siempre dispuesto a ayudar. Explica de forma clara y dinámica, haciendo las clases muy amenas e interesantes. Se nota su dedicación y vocación por la enseñanza. Sin duda, ha impartido la asignatura de una manera excelente :)” - Student in Intercultural Pragmatics in English at University of Alicante, Spring 2026.
