Inspired by the exquisite molecular recognition capabilities of proteins, ProNOSE (Protein + Nose) explores a new approach to electronic nose technology by integrating biological recognition elements with solid-state electrical devices. Proteins offer diverse binding pockets and chemically tailored interfaces that can interact selectively with target molecules. By coupling these recognition events to electrodes, we investigate how molecular binding and protein–electrode interactions influence electrical signals, enabling the development of compact, sensitive, and potentially label-free sensing platforms. Our research aims to understand the fundamental relationship between molecular recognition, interfacial charge transport, and sensor response, paving the way for next-generation bioelectronic noses for gas detection, environmental monitoring, and health-related applications.
