The Philippines has been slipping in global indices that measure gender equality. From a previous ranking of 8^th, the country slipped to 16^th in 2019 and 2020 and then to 17^th place in 2021, according to the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Report highlighting the decline in political and labor force participation of women, two key indicators that determine a country’s ranking.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a substantial number of women in vulnerable sectors to lose their jobs. Time spent on unpaid care work increased significantly due to sickness in the family, particularly among the elderly, and also to increased demands of children studying at home. Those who remained employed were challenged to balance all these roles while remaining productive at their jobs. Meanwhile, domestic violence and sexual abuse likely increased as lockdowns and quarantines forced victims to stay home with their abusers and police and government services became less accessible.

During these extraordinary times, we need an extraordinary leader.

We need a President who:

strongly believes in inclusivity and in the equal treatment of all and values everyone’s contributions regardless of their age, gender, sexual orientation, or any other differentiating identity;
has a track record of support for grassroots-based leadership and of listening to all directly affected by policy measures;
has an exceptional history of judicious management of government resources and the proper implementation of programs; and
exemplifies political maturity, thereby inspiring ordinary citizens to do good.

WE NEED LENI ROBREDO TO BE OUR NEXT PRESIDENT.

In her previous calling as an alternative lawyer providing free legal assistance for indigents, Leni Robredo saw firsthand the relationship between power imbalance and Violence Against Women and their Children. When she became a legislator, she passed laws and created livelihood opportunities to empower women by making them less dependent on others.

As she seeks to become the next President, Leni Robredo recognizes the need for:

supporting the passage of an Anti-Discrimination Law;
creating more day care centers to allow mothers to work;
improving access to justice for victims of abuse and violence, especially among women, children, and other vulnerable groups;
expanding access to affordable and comprehensive women’s health care;
improving gender-responsiveness in climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction and management; and
improving the dissemination of information on government programs and services that are geared towards realizing gender equality and the empowerment of all girls and women.

We believe that Leni Robredo is the only candidate who has the expertise, capability, and integrity to do all these. Therefore, we, the former officials and employees of the Philippine Commission on Women and other advocates of gender equality and women empowerment, support the candidacy of Vice President Leni Robredo as President of the Republic of the Philippines.
