ABOUT US
Feminist Pencere is an independent digital journalism project founded by two women writers during their final year at university as part of an academic and journalistic production process. The project emerged from the founders’ desire to develop a data-driven and critical approach to reporting on gender-based violence. Initiated while they were still students, Feminist Pencere was conceived as an independent platform focused on public-interest journalism. The project concentrates on violence against women, femicides, and suspicious female deaths in Türkiye, challenging the tendency to frame these cases as isolated incidents and instead presenting them as structural and societal problems. By combining a feminist perspective with data journalism practices, Feminist Pencere aims to produce critical, questioning, and public-interest-oriented reporting.
The data used in the project is primarily sourced from the records maintained by the We Will Stop Femicide Platform (Kadın Cinayetlerini Durduracağız Platformu), which documents femicide cases across Türkiye. As these datasets are often fragmented and presented in different formats, they were first cleaned, classified, and standardized using spreadsheet software. During the data-cleaning process, duplicate records were removed, temporal consistency was ensured, and thematic categories were created. This step was essential for producing reliable and analyzable datasets.
Data analysis was conducted using Excel, focusing on yearly distributions, case types, and temporal patterns. These analyses were not limited to numerical findings but were supported by contextual interpretations aimed at understanding the social dimensions of femicides. In addition, original surveys were designed and conducted to examine public perceptions of femicides and suspicious female deaths, and the resulting data was integrated into the journalistic content.
Data visualization plays a central role in Feminist Pencere’s storytelling approach. Visualizations were primarily created using Flourish, allowing complex datasets to be transformed into accessible charts, interactive tables, and visual narratives. This approach enables readers to engage more directly with the data and facilitates clearer understanding of structural patterns of violence.
The content produced by Feminist Pencere goes beyond daily news reporting and serves as a public archive that documents femicides and suspicious female deaths. The project aims to ensure that these cases are not forgotten, remain traceable, and are open to public scrutiny. In this sense, Feminist Pencere positions itself not only as a journalism platform but also as a civic initiative that contributes to public awareness, accountability, and discussions on gender-based violence.
