I am listening to a music compilation titled Total War: Rome 2 OST - Campaign Compilation. This is composed by Richard Beddow and performed either by the Prague Philharmonic or Slovak National Orchestra, as per the details in the video description. The track starting at 3:58 mins has a humming female voice alongside some stringed and woodwind instruments.

There's quite a lot of wordless female voice in the track, but I don't hear any humming.

The music doesn't really fit any genre, it's written to evoke a kind of general 'ethnic' feeling without actually copying a specific style. As is typical for this kind of background music, it tries to evoke an atmosphere without drawing attention to itself. So it's probably best described as "pseudo-ethnic film music"

Im looking for almost like a dream like type of sound, but with a female vocalist. Im really new to this type of music so I really dont know where to look, lots of the things i have heard dont really fit my tastes as im looking for a specific sound. TIA!

My background music is set up on A3 and A4, and this is where everything always gets so muddied - I always bring the music levels way down so that the VO stands out a bit, but nothing seems to satisfy me; the background audio just sounds either too "far" or too "fake"..

In my case right now, it's a cooking show with mild instrumental electronic music in the background throughout the entire clip. I totally hear what you're saying, but my problem's always with the background music - making that drown in the mix and making the VO stand out without over-exagerating.

Is it better to lower the background audio or bring up the VO instead? I feel that by lowering the background track, that's where the muddling effect takes place - the VO ends up sounding "unnatural" and the electronic music too blah. It's hard to make it unified and seem right on.

Use EQ on the VO to amplify the presence of voice. Lets say we add +3dB around 1.5kHz in this example. Then copy your EQ to the music tracks and change it to maybe -3dB or -6dB. Now you've created a "hole" in the music for the VO.

I know it's a case-per-case thing, but how low would you say your music bed should be? If the VO peaks roughly around +6dB, would you say it's safer to keep the background audio down towards -6dB, or should it be even lower, considering that there will be quick slopes added?

For example, if I have a female narrator with a relatively higher frequency voice, I'll EQ a little of the higher frequencies out of the music running under her narration. If you were to then hear the EQ'd music without her voice, you might think it sounds a little weak at the top end, but when mixed with the higher frequencies of the female voice, the music (without all those high's) balances out and allows her voice to be heard cleanly. Conversely, with a very deep "psuedo-James Earl Jones" male voice, I'll will EQ out some of the bass to keep it from fighting his booming VO.

For each slice in time that you take an FFT, this will give you a list of frequencies and their amplitudes. You will somehow need to detect the fundamental tone by analysing the harmonics. The 2nd and 3rd harmonics will be clearest. It's very hard to figure out which harmonics they are, especially with the background noise and the natural difference between people's voices in terms of which harmonics are loudest. Then you can try to determine if the speaker is male or female by whatever you guessed the fundamental tone to be.

I think this is already possible. I just started taking an on-line course on Machine Learning by Stanford University with professor Andrew Ng, and during the first lecture he shows a demo where an audio recording of two overlapping voices is processed and the individual voices extracted (the same with music in the background and a person speaking). Apparently it uses an unsupervised learning algorithm that allows it to extract the two underlying patterns. You may want to look into that course (there's one version of the course here: -learning)

If they are separate, your more likely bet is to have a large set of samples of male and female voices, and look for common characteristics (and a way to programmatically identify them). If the samples aren't recorded cleanly (if they have background noise), things get even more complicated.

Dune's otherworldly score has been well received as something unorthodox for Zimmer. Pulling from a variety of cultures to represent the different planets, as well as creating new instrumentation to get across the science-fiction element, the score's most notable motifs contain female voices and choirs. Three full soundtrack albums were released for the film - The Dune Sketchbook, Dune (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), and The Art and Soul of Dune - and women's voices come to the fore throughout. The song "Paul's Dream" from The Dune Sketchbook contains perhaps the most notable striking female voice, used in the movie's theatrical trailer.

While Timothe Chalamet's Paul Atreides is the story's protagonist, the music does indeed reflect the strength that female characters possess in Villeneuve's adaptation. The Reverend Mother of the Bene Gesserit - the all-female religious order to which Paul's mother, Lady Jessica, belongs - exhibits both power and authority in Dune's famous Gom Jabbar scene. It's Lady Jessica who trains Paul in the ways of the Bene Gesserit, passing her knowledge down to him, and though Zendaya's Chani gets less screen-time than the trailers suggested, she appears as a capable warrior who is certain to play a greater part in the sequel. With Dune: Part 2 now confirmed for 2023, Zimmer will also be returning, and fans are hoping that he hasn't already exhausted his library of otherworldly sounds.
